8 Days in Germany - Where to?

Hi Folks - I have 8 days to go anywhere in Germany at the end of this month, arriving the 24th and leaving the 3rd of February. I did a similar trip two years ago where I flew into Munich, spent a few days in Munich, took a train to Prague for four days, then back to Munich for a day before heading back to the States - without too much planning, and had a great time. I am looking for another roam around and am looking for advice on where to go and what to do.

I loved Prague - the Castle, the old town, the great history. I was thinking maybe flying into Frankfurt and renting a car then heading someplace to base out of, not sure where - maybe Koblenz? A historic town where I could get an inexpensive room (under $65) on or near an old town square with parking thrown in?

Trips might include Trier, Wurzburg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber/Dinkelsbuhl - lots of scenic roads, old town squares, beautiful views, and of course castles. Would love to hit eastern France as well if it is permitted by the rental company (SIXT - any other suggestions?)

Any advice on where to stay and what to do would sure be appreciated!

Eight days isn't much - 2 or three cities at most. You need to get a map of Germany and do some initial research to get an idea of where you would like to go.

In 8 days, landing in Frankfurt, concentrate on the Rhine valley, the Mosel and the Black Forest. You might be able to figure out a circular route that that starts in Frankfurt, includes Luxembourg and the Alsace/Lorraine, and ends in Frankfurt.

Thanks for replies. This will be my 6th trip to Germany - I usually go to Europe with the intent to roam around with a list of things I'd like to do and no real definite plans other than to get back to the airport on time. I would like to find a town near Frankfurt that is historic and scenic to base out of, then take day trips. I am pretty sure I want to hit the medieval walled cities, maybe a boatride on the Rhine, tour some castles, and eat some great food. Looking for suggestions of places to go and things to see.

Since you seem familiar with Wurzburg, R od T, and Trier, which are the obvious Frankfurt area recommendations, how about Quedlinburg?

You could visit Wernigerode, Goslar, Duderstadt, Wolfenbuttel (Jagermiester!), Gottingen, Hannoversch Munden, and even some of the smaller resort towns in the Harz mountains themselves if you fancy some winter sport or the weather is right for driving.

Have you been to Bamberg? That would make a good base for Nuremberg, Coburg, and Bayreuth, as well as Wurzburg and R od T, allowing you to venture a little farther than if you had stayed in Wurzburg or R od T them selves.
