8 days between Munich, Salzburg, Prague
 

Looking for feedback re: the last 8/9 days of our 3-wk trip this fall. We arrive to Munich very early AM, will spend either 3 or 4 nights there, 1 night in Salzburg, and finish up with 3 or 4 nights in Prague before flying back to the states. We will be seeing Dachau and also taking train down to Neuschwanstein area for a day trip - would you recommend spending the extra night in Munich with those two time-consuming activities or recommend a 4th night in Prague? Thanks in advance!

If you are willing to get up early you can do Dachau in way less than a whole day.

I'd recommend an extra day in Salzburg and doing a bus trip to the nearby Sound of Music Country - a k a The Lake District, where much of the famous film was shot - public buses take about an hour to St Gilgen - then take a boat to St Wolfgang (or bus) - a picture postcard resort town at the foot of a mountain and surround by the gorgeous lake.

This to me is a great alternative to another night in a large city.

I've been to Prague several times and for me 3 days was enough to see the sights there that are in a very compact area.

Palen, that is a great thought and honestly I had not considered doing two nights in Sburg, but I will look into it! We have a lot of big city time, so both my husband and I would love a longer break. This was a late add-on to the trip, as you may remember my rough itinerary from last fall. Wasn't sure on timing in Prague though. Thanks!

IMHO 4 nights (3 days) is minimum for Prague - there is an incredible amount to see and do and it's one of the very few cities in central europe that have original architecture (not bombed to oblivion in WWII since it was just handed over to Hitler - for all the good that did).

Ah yes the lovely Austrian Lake District! See you're taking the train - for lots of great info on trains in Eastern Europe check out these IMO superb sites: www.budgeteuropetravel.com; www.ricksteves.com and www.seat61.com - the latter has good info on discounted train tickets. For travel in Bavaria like to Fuessen and Mad Ludwig's Castles and even to Salzburg you can avail yourself of the bargain Bavarian Lander Ticket where for 29 euros or several people can ride regional trains and all urban transports for the whole day - you can't ride the faster trains but to Fuessen at least there are only regional trains.

To Salzburg regional trains would take about an hour longer but for the huge savings in cost well worth it (Salzburg though in Austria is considered to be a German station for Lander Ticket purposes.

the Austrian Railways site http://www.oebb.at/en/ also has discounted tickets you can book online - cheaper than just buying at the station.
