$750 is a good price for RT ticket to Paris

I just purchased a round-trip ticket from DC to Paris (direct) in mid-September for $750. My dear friend who is flying from Philly can get a direct flight to Paris for approximately the same price. She thinks she can do better (on a direct flight) if she waits a few weeks. Last September, we were able to workout the same itinerary for about $640 each, and she thinks she can beat or match it. I think it is a HUGE risk since the best-case scenario (which is unlikely) is that she that she saves $100 and the more likely scenario is that she ends up spending $1000 - $1500 for a direct flight. We must go direct because we will only be there for a couple of days. Please tell one of us she is crazy.

O.K. I'll bite. She's crazy.

1. The price of oil just went up to $77 a barrel; jet fuel prices will follow suit.

2. Mid September is a busy time to fly to Paris(Auto show, fashion week, great weather)and it's only 2 months away.

You have the tickets, and obviously can afford it because you purchased them. She wants to wait to save $100 at a time when fuel (have you listened to the news today?) is still shooting up.

I can see into the future, and I predict that one of you will be flying to Paris in September.

Have fun!

Flights to Europe are up about 25% over last year. Why reason does your friend give for thinking she can fly this year at last years prices?

Bottom line: you are right and your friend is talking crazy talk.

I would say be happy with your purchase, and let her be happy with her wait.

Have a great trip! And best wishes for your friend.

PS-when did you book your trip last year? That will be the most telling with regards to prices. If you purchased the same time last year...

Hi MA,

>the best-case scenario (which is unlikely) is that she that she saves $100 and the more likely scenario is that she ends up spending $1000 ...<

I pretty much agree with you. The downside is much lower than the upside is high.

I won't say your friend is crazy, but I will say she is dreaming. But hey, sometimes dreams come true. Not always, though.

Well I just got my notification from AirFrance for their Fall and Winter sales...pretending...I could leave Philly on 9/14 and come back 9/21 for $746 and change; the same if I stay over through 9/25...

I'm going to check into Philly to Nice for late November...
