7 days in Iceland. Need help

We are in the beginning stages of planning a week long to trip to Iceland for July. I know we want to spend some time in Reykavik and then go off to see the countryside. I have seen so many wonderful trip reports here that I am overwhelmed. Where to start? Assuming we spend one or two days in the capital, where should we concentrate the remaining 5 days? I know trying to do the whole ring road is too ambitious. Where should we focus? If possible, I would love to stay on a farm for a night, would love to hike a bit, snowmobile and raft/kayak. Suggestions?

Thanks so much.

You might want to consider along the south coast to Skaftafell National Park (glacier, walks) and on towards Höfn (trips into icecap).

I agree with the last person to post. I was in Iceland during Labor Day weekend in 2005, from a Friday morning until a Wednesday afternoon, so I had 6 days and 5 nights there and we rented a car for the whole time. We explored the city on Friday, slept, and then went out (stayed in Reykavik). Saturday, we did the Golden Circle and went out in the city (stayed the night in Reykavik). Sunday to Tuesday, we explored the south coast of Iceland as far east as the glacial lagoon in Skaftafell National Park. We did not go all the way to Hofn, but got pretty close (Sunday night stayed in a hotel 1 hr east of Vik and on Monday night stayed at a hotel in Skaftafell National Park). On Tuesday, we drove back to the airport to drop a friend off, those of us remaining in Iceland went to the Blue Lagoon and out in the city (we stayed in Reykavik). Wednesday morning we went around the city more before leaving back for the US on an afternoon flight. If you would like me to send you pics, send me an email.

Also, I would advice stopping at the Blue Lagoon after you land. We landed so early, we were unable to check into our guesthouse, so we walked around the city and got some food, but most things were closed because it was so early. Go the Blue Lagoon and relax in the nice warm water. It is great, then head over to the city!!!

Cheers,

You might consider a few days in Akureyri, Iceland's second largest city. From Akureyri, you could do several day trips to other areas of northern Iceland.
