7 days in Germany
My husband and I will be in Germany for a week during the end of July. Any suggestions on where to go and what to see? We will be traveling by train.

Julie: Many fodorite's can help you if you provide more details, like your interests, where you will arrive and depart from and any "must see's" that you have in mind.

Seven days is a decent amount of time, but will probably limit you to certain regions, like Bavaria, Black Forest, Middle Rhine, etc.

You'll get ideas from others and you can also search this website, also. Good luck!

I would stay mostly in Southern Germany visiting Bavaria inc Ludwigs castles, Oberammergau, Munich, side trip to Salzburg also in former East Germany, Dresden, Libsig, BERLIN. That would take all of your time plus. I loved Germany and plan on taking a long trip back there in a couple of years.
That's a difficult one because Germany has so much & 1 week is so short.
If you are into history & culture, then Berlin is a must. It is a beautiful, friendly city with so much to see and do--from Checkpoint Charlie Museum to Reichstag to Potsdam. Dresden is a 2-hour train ride south & is impressive since it was totally destroyed in WWII.
If you like mountains, then Southern Germany: Berchtsgaden (Hitler's Eagle's Nest); Munich with the palace, beer halls, good food; Oberammagau with its Passion Play.
If you like smaller towns: the Romantic Road through Rothenburg, the Fairy Tale Road & to Hamelin (Pied Piper fame--they do a re-creation on Sunday evenings).
A ride on the Rhine with great wine in Koblenz. Hannover is having a big festival some time this summer. And that is leaving out many places--including the coast in the northeast corner. If you have not looked at the German rail site at bahn.hafas.de, you should for schedules, times, fares, etc.

Thanks for the info so far. I guess I left out some info. Basically we are into history and sightseeing (castles, cathedrals...). Our starting point is Frankfurt. We have decided not to have a home base but rather travel around. We are open to any suggestions! Thanks for your help!
