7 days in Europe...help!
 

Hi all,

My husband and I will be in Copenhagen this mid-July...we were planing on taking an extra week and do a small road-trip in Europe before heading back home. We had our heart set on Spain but have been discouraged from doing it in July since it will be so hot. We are now at a loss of where to spend out week. We would love to still be able to drive, if possible, but having never really spent much time in Europe, I'm not sure where to start looking for routes that are scenic and really give us a feel of the coutryside/landscape.

Can anyone help point me in the right direction?? I know 1 week is not a lot of time...We are open to staying in the Northern parts of Europe or flying somewhere and renting a car from there...

From Copenhagen it makes sense to drive only in the immediate area. I would drive up to Stockholm, stopping at one place on the way up and another on the way back and spend the rest of the time there. It;s a fascinating city with a ton to see and do.

Driving anyplace else from Copenhagen doesn't really make sense. Other places would require a flight to get there and renting a card on the ground. In that case I would do an open jaws flight - into Copenhagen and then out of wherever.

Switch is gorgeous - but VERY expensive - perhaps even more expensive than Scandinavia. Germany would be much cheaper and you might want to fly into Munich and do a road trip of southern Germany - which will also give you a bunch of time in the mountains.

If you can afford it -- the Alps are simply marvelous that time of year. If not, then Croatia or Serbia? Also Turkey is becoming one of the new "hot spots" for Summer travel.

problem is that the weather is so strange right now, no one knows what to expect. Tho I totally agree on Spain being too hot...

Well, it takes a little less time to drive to Berlin, and a very large portion of northern Germany for that matter, than it does to get to Stockholm (using a ferry for a portion of the trip), so there are certainly other options even without flying.

It is 7 hours to Stockholm which means that you can drive (no ferries) and get to Lubeck ( 4 hours), Hamburg (4.5 hours), Bremen (5.5 hours), Wismar (4.5 hours), Luneberg and/or Schwerin (4 hours), and Celle (5.5 hours) in significantly less time than it takes to get to Stockholm. That gives you a taste of a couple of Germany's northern Baltic and North Sea states.

Goslar, Quedlinburg, and Wernigerode are all just under 7 hours from Copenhagen, providing an option to also extend your visit to the Gorgeous Harz mountain region and see some of Germany's finest timber-framed house towns.

The Baltic coast is lovely so you could work your way along the German north coast Lubeck is pretty good but they the capitals of the Baltic states are nice and then get to Helsinki (ferry reqd) and enjoy a proper sauna. Lots of swimming, fresh fish and even Northern Poland which can include Gdansk and pop down to Malbork (home of the Teutonic Knights)
