7 days in Bavaria, Salzkammergut and Salzburg with our two teen daughters.

We are spending 7 days in Bavaria and Austria in June with our 12 and 16 year old daughters. I want to stay in Mittenwald, Salzburg and somewhere in the Salzkammergut. I know Hallstatt is gorgeous, also the Gosau See, I also love St. Wolfgang. Any suggestions on what town to stay in for 3 nights in the Salzkammergut? Should we stay in 2 towns? Also ideas on places to stay in Mittenwald. We are active, love hiking, animals and adventure. We would love to do a Farm stay somewhere please share any suggestions.

I would also love to hear about great activities for adventurous teens. Thanks!

We stay at Haus Schweigart in Mittenwald. Our teen boys love the town and the surroundings. The Leutashklamm walk is gorgeous. Nearby Garmish -Partenkirchen has another ravine walk, the Partnachklamm, a toboggan run and a kletterwald. We will rent bikes in Mittenwald next visit, if your girls like cycling.

Thanks. The ravine and toboggan run sound fantastic. What is a Kletterwald?

Will you have a car or going by public transportation - base cities are great but with public transportation it makes a difference - public transit is fantastic in that area but to base in say St Wolfgang and day trip to Hallstatt takes time by bus and train can be done but if going by trains and buses I would base a few days each in St Wolfgang and Hallsatt - the latter offers salt mine tours and much more rugged Alps than St Wolfgang - when there take the steam train up the mountain above the town and walk down.

For info on public transit check www.budgeteuropetravel.com; www.ricksteves.com and www.seat61.com. Postal buses from Salzburg to the Lake District are frequent and cheap and once there boats take you everywhere along with buses.

You do not need a car to get to any place you mention and if staying in towns and hiking there is always local transit to get you to the neat hiking venues.
