6 nights in Santa Margherita too long?
We've been looking at staying in Santa Margherita with our two (adult) children (24 & 26) and I was wondering if 6 nights here is going to be too long. We are not familiar with the area at all and I see that it is mainly for hikers. I am a keen photographer and thought I could combine this with taking ferry trips to the little seaside towns of Portofino and Cinque Terre region. Are we doing the right thing???

I stayed a week there coming up to a couple of years ago and thoroughly enjoyed the time at SML. Normally I move around but wanted to just stay put and was very glad of that decision. It is a well sized town, great walks up into the hills behind the town and yes ferry and train rides to other nearby towns.
You don't say what time of year you are thinking of going.
There are plenty of terrific restaurants around the town and the surrounding villages/towns and it has a really great feel to the place.
So to answer your questions, no, I don't think 6 nights is too long.

I think that is a great location to roam that coast and go crazy with your camera. Try to include Camogli and Portovenere in your excursions---some great photo ops. Try to get shots at Portofino from the water.

I am not a hiker and I thoroughly enjoyed my 6 nights in the area, split between Camogli and SML. You will not want to miss the views of the beach at Paraggi; you can walk from SML, or take the bus.
I found Camogli even more photogenic than SML. Portofino is tiny and therefore can become overrun with daytrippers; I would plan my visit accordingly.

Using Santa Margherita Ligure as a base you can make day trips by train and/or boat to the Cinque Terre and even Genoa as well as the many coastal towns around: Camogli, Rapallo, Sestri Levante, etc. So you could spend a very relaxing and scenic 5 days.

I just stayed 4 nights there last week. I never got bored and I am a very restless person. You can take several different day trips. If you go to Cinque Terre, be sure to take the boat from Monterosso to the other villages including Portovenere. It is absolutely beautiful coming up to the villages. I also went to Camogli and Portofino on one day. Another day Chiavari and Rapallo. And I have been to Santa Margherita many times in the past-still didn't get bored on this trip.
