6 nights Basque Country - Hotel Costs (July 2012)
I'll be spending 6 nights in Basque Country in July and after doing the math I'll be paying approx. CAD$102/€79 per night (1 person) for a combination of pensions/hostels/hotel. And that includes 2 nights in Pamplona for the San Fermin festival.
Is that reasonable? I was going to try to Couchsurf in Pamplona but since it'll be so busy, competition for a couch will be fierce (plus having my own private space for a few hours between the madness would be great). Much thanks. |
It does seem a reasonable price for peak season, such as July. You may try on www.nekatur.net for cozy rural accommodation, but you may need a car...

Very wise to have a room of your own in Pamplona! I've been here some five-six times and always either slept in the car or in one of the parks (as do thousands). Always been completely mad when leaving after some three days, but los Sanfermines are the best! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFK-A4uTw4s
The closing ceremony at midnight on the 14th, when everyone's singing the "Pobre de mi" ("Poor me!"): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tlBe...eature=related After San Fermín, living next door to the church bells in Pension Amaiur in San Sebastián would be a breeze... Expect also some San Fermín tendencies in San Sebastián, people tend to flock here before and after going to Pamplona. Could be a huge experience! |
I just watched the videos. AMAZING!! I cannot wait for it. Thanks.

Are you referring to a single room with ensuite? if so, except for the Pamplona portion, it is a bit on the high side.
|
If you are comfortable with those prices, I'd say you are in great shape. That's slightly under what we paid per night back in 2003 in late September for well-located doubles (in Euros, however the exchange rate was "better" then). We stayed in Pamplona, Vitoria-G, Bilbao and Lekeitio.

I was trying to keep it to under €60/night but that's impossible when adding Pamplona in there. I guess it's worth it to pay a bit more for my own room and bathroom for San Fermin!
@mikelg - I checked those out and yes, looks like I would need a car. Unfortunately that's too much to add to my budget and I can't drive manual! :) Thanks for the info everyone. |
A room in Pamplona during fiesta on €79/night will be a challenge, to say the least. What hostals there are will be at least €140/night for a private room for one person, if you can find one, or you can check with the university for a shared room. A 3-star hotel, not in the center, will set you back around €280/night.
