6 hours at Heathrow: taxi to Windsor

I'll have 6 hours at Heathrow Airport between flights (June, Saturday). I want take a taxi to Windsor.
Do I have enough time? How to spend this time in Windsor? How much I should pay for the taxi? Is it a problem to find a taxi from Windsor back to Heathrow? Can I pay for the taxi by credit card (VISA or Mastercard)?

I cannot comment on the timing for transportation but I would hazard a guess that even though it is a charming place, the reason people go there is to see and tour the Castle.

You have enough time to get there and back. How much you can do/see once you get there depends on whether you have to check in 1, 2 or 3 hrs before your ongoing flight. Only your airline can tell you that and don't underestimate the time it takes to go through security. Also keep in mind that you generally have to ride a bus to get to the plane from the terminal, so they often "close" the flight a half hour or more before departure time.

The castle is the main event but there are also some pleasant shops, a walk over to Eton and a number of other things you can read about on their website here.

There are also some pleasant tea shops/restaurants for a lunch. I don't know the cost of a taxi. I would guess a pre booked car service would be cheaper and might allow you to pay by credit card. If I detect a desire to avoid getting pounds, remember you will need some cash for entry fees and incidentals. I would also prebook a car service for the return in order to avoid last minute angst.

You might want to check with Swiss Cottage Cars or just airports for prices and estimated travel time.

The town's website (www.windsor.gov.uk) suggests pre booking a taxi to collect you from the airport and return you there later. This is much cheaper than arriving and jumoping in a black cab. About £20.00 per single journey as against £40.00. The site lists a couple of taxi firms. You should ask as to whether they take credit cards.

You should have enough time to see The Castle and maybe take a stroll in The Great Park or along the river.

just even a stroll in the town and a coffee break looking over the thames is worth the trip. we took the bus and had plenty of time for an 8 hr layover. tiem to spare.
we took a long boat ride, too and had a leisurely lunch at nearby pub.

the bus took 15 minutes or so. (max. 20.)

Like lincasanova..I'd opt for the bus for the trip to windsor..maybe 20 minutes or so to get there. You'd have plenty of time to see the castle and walk around the town and cross over to Eton. Then either catch a bus back to the airport or call on a local taxi. Be sure to allow at least 1.5 to 2 hours to pass security and check in. Heathrow can be a MESS! You'd have at least 5 hours to spend in Windsor

The buses are run by First (Thames Valley). It's route 50A and leaves Heathrow Central Bus Station at 03 and 33 minutes past each hour, taking about half an hour to Windsor.

While at Windsor Castle, don't miss St. George's Chapel, a beautiful building wherein are buried Henry VIII and George VI, to name only a few monarchs. Also fun to visit is Queen Mary's Dolls' House--wonderful miniature furniture, chandeliers, and carpets.
