6 days in Rome I have put together an itinerary - Please help me

We are spending 6 days in Rome - can't wait. This is our provisional itinerary please will you help in case I have made some glaring omissions or please make suggestions to change it. I cannot change the Colosseum as it is the only one I have booked and paid for. I have tried to book the Scavi tour but they are full the whole week - so disappointed.....

Other possibilities where can I fit them in?

Other questions
Do I buy a Rail card?
Do I buy a Roma Pass?
Please help me but making other suggestions as well.
Looking forward to all the advice you can give.

My first comment is that your first day is very full, your third quite open. the spanish steps and trevi will take you no time at all.

my understanding is that the appian way is best on a sunday when parts of it at least aare closed to traffic, and subject to the timing of your Borghese slot, you might do that then.

you might also have to rethink the Dome part of your st. peter's/Vatican day - i'm not sure what time the dome officially opens, but i seem to remember that we turned up at about 9.15 am and they weren't yet selling tickets for it. [but that was February, it may be different in June].

one place you have NOT mentioned that we loved was the galleria doria pamphilji - just near Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, very interesting, wonderful art, and not many people.

have a great trip!

Great ideas. As we are staying close to the Spanish Steps and Trevi may be I can fit them in another day and then do the cycling of the Appian Way on Sunday afternoon after visiting the Borghese.
Have I selected wisely on the 2 day trips or should I swap one for Orvieto?

On the 5th:

I would consider making climb up the dome that last thing planned for the day. That way, you'll be sure you all have the energy and legs for everything else planned that day. Otherwise, it's possible you'll be wiped out before you even begin the day (unless all in your group are very fit).

Plan on a few hours seeing the inside St. Peter's itself - there's a LOT there even before climbing the dome. Also, you could easily spend a whole day in the Vatican museum - and that doesn't include lines and the Sistine chapel.

A nice LONG lunch break between the basilica and the museum is a good idea. You may even consider separate days, as suggested above.

Brink a backpack PICNIC to Giancolo Hill - it's what all the local families who go there do. It's a wonderful park for relaxing, taking panoramic photos and just hanging out (the one little snack stand there is truly awful). Consider taking a bus or taxi (about the same cost for a small group) UP to the park and then walking DOWN the hill to Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere for a final drink/snack before crossing the river (via bus, foot, or taxi) back toward your hotel.

Your two day trips are fine. Yes, research the logistics now but wait and make final decisions once you are there. You may decide after being in Rome a few days to stay and see more of Rome and/or weather may influence things.

Thank you bardo1.
The tour we are thinking of booking lasts 4 hours called Arte Vaticana with Context tours to see St Peters and Vatican Museum's. Hopefully this will be informative and enjoyable but we will visit the various area's in the order they decide. But If you think that we should organise this day differently I am very open to suggestions.
We will definitely dothe picnic and walk down. thanks

As we are staying close to the Spanish Steps and Trevi may be I can fit them in another day >>

they will take approx 5 mins each. you can do them as you walk past from and to your hotel eery day.

personally i would do the Dome as early as possible to avoid the queues later on, and if i can do it and keep going for the rest of the day, anyone can! [getting the lift up to roof level helps!]

Check my trip report for some general tips and a link to some photos.

I'm with Annhig on getting to the dome early. My family really loved a very inexpensive pizza by the slice place near by as well.

Good luck.
