6-7 days - HELP!
 

My hubby and I will be in Italy backpacking and I'm trying to decide what will be best for our trip. We will start in Rome and stay one or two nights and will definitly go to Menaggio (at the hostel) and Manarolla (hostel in cinque terre). That leaves maybe 2 days to do something else - what should we not miss? (Florence and Venice are not possibilities - we've been there done that.) I was thinking something in Tuscany or Umbria.

You wouldn't want to spend more time in Rome? 1 or 2 nights is barely scratching the surface.

Yikes! I just figured out that Mennagio is way up by Lake Como. Do you realize how much driving/training you'll be doing? Three spread out destinations in 6-7 days is more than enough for most people; I wouldn't add another unless you enjoy spending most of your time seeing Italy from the train window.

Are you doing night trains? Is this all in 6-7 days? Where are you flying out of? Back to Rome for the flight home?

With 6 days and 3 places already chosen, I don't think you need to add anything else!

Let me echo the others. I'd go straight north from Rome. I assume you are departing from Milan. Do 3 days in Tuscany/Umbria and then go to Menaggio.

I've already "done" Rome twice. We'll be traveling by train. We're backpacking light and we're pretty earthy people so I'm not really worried about traveling a lot. We'll do Cinque Terre before Menaggio and then go to Heidelberg Germany to stay with close friends. We'll fly out of Frankfurt.

Sorry if it seems we're ganging up on you...we're all just trying to help.

Well, since you've &quot;done&quot; Rome twice, as you put it, why not fly into Milan? It will save you a couple of hours on the train going to Cinque Terre. Flying into Pisa or Genoa would be even closer, although those destinations are usually more expensive and require an extra layover. It's worth a look, though.

And if two destinations (Lake Como and Cinque Terre) in six days plus travel time is not enough to keep you occupied, there are dozens of interesting stops in between, including Milan. Or, if you want to see more of Tuscany, it looks like Pisa and the walled city of Lucca are not that far out of the way.
