Others have already given great advice. One more little note to add to this. We stayed in Sorento and took the train to Pompeii. On our return, a very old lady with several shopping bags was seated across from us. Three of the most beautiful lemons with leaves and stems were perched atop one of her bags. Of course, Sorrento is known for it's lemons. I whispered to my husband how lovely they were and that I would like to get some to paint. She left the train before us and as she passed, placed the lemons in my lap. It was a highlight of the trip for me. Luxury touring is nice, but regular travel also has great rewards.

I see mention of tour guides that "gather up people" at Pompeii and give a tour. We are leaving for Rome tomorrow (hurray!) and I don't have a sense of what those "unofficial" guides might charge per person. I know they will ask for more -- not sure what I should try to negotiate. Any experience here from Fodorites?

We used a private guide in Pompeii. Cost was 100 euro for a 2 hour tour (4 adults). Arrangements were made in advance.

We had Gaetano Manfredi as our guide
last September - if you can get him,
use him for sure - he is excellent.
And fun. And v. good looking.
