50 places you must see before you die...

The BBC has conducted an internet poll (20 000 people) for a tv programme. Its just been published. Nothing very surprising however a little depressing perhaps.
The top 10 are "dominated by structures celebrating man's religion and his ability to gamble, build large cities and make cartoon mice."

Top TenBR>1/ Grand canyon
2/ Great barrier reef
3/ Walt Disney World, Florida
4/ South Island, New Zealand
5/ Cape Town
6/ Golden Temple, Amritsar
7/ Las Vegas
8/ Sydney
9/ New York
10/ Taj Mahal

Intersting none in Europe in the top ten... none in the UK in entire top 50. Maybe UK and Europe are seen as a bit parochial by the voters.

Thoughts anyone?

I would have to add the Great Wall of China to that list.

3 of the top 10 are in the Australia/New Zealand area. Either I've been missing something, or this study ain't very representative...

I made my list about 20 years ago and am happy to report that I have now seen most of them. I still have some notable exceptions---New Zealand, Patagonia, South Africa, the fjords of Norway. They share the same constraint--too far to travel on my bum back.

Can only conclude that most of the 20 000 voters were British who would pick far away destinations, not UK or even Europe. A similar poll in the US would probably have opposite results.

I dont think that's a fair statement. Those categories put together equal only 4 out of 10. That leaves 6 out of 10 as natural wonders. Even with the above-mentioned categories added together they don't "dominate" the top ten.

having spent considerable time in NZ, to say north or south island is a bit like saying US. Rather large places, and topographically, major varieties of landscape, wildlife, etc. And you omitted Stewart Island, any reason? Time for some realistic research, and then a realistic list.

I would like to add the Gobi Desert in Mongolia - it's breathtaking!

I wouldn't have Niagara Falls rated that high, and certainly not above Victoria Falls, Everest and the Pyramids!

I have seen the Great Wall of China, the Parthenon, Mt. Everest, Taj Mahal, Angkor Wat, the warriors of Xian, Fatima, St. Basil's, the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, the Louvre, and the Ganges. All I want to see now are:

1. Auschwitz
2. Sydney Harbour
3. Buenos Aires
4. Vietnam
5. Jerusalem

I wondered if this would lead to lists of our own personal wishes...

In alphabetic order, and undoubtedly not very well though out...

1. Getty Museum, Los Angeles

2. Hawaii

3. Mexico, not sure where - - to capture the true "essence" of

4. Perigord/Dordogne

5. Rio de Janeiro

6. Scotland

7. St Petersburg and probably other parts of Russia

8. Vienna/Czech Republic/Poland

9. Villa Feltrinelli or any other hotel that is really worth over $1000 a night

and not in alphabetic order - - and not likely to happen - - but...

earth, from orbit, at least for 24 hours or so...

Best wish(ing)...
