5 weeks in Spain
 

We are hiring a car for 32 days driving in Spain after 5 nights in Barcelona.
Would love some ideas on best places to go or not go, any hints & tips re driving & parking in cities .
Read where it is a good idea to leave the cat at the train station on Seville, any more ideas please.

Going early May till 20 th June. Love history, tapas, people watching, fabulous buildings. Thinking about Gibraltar & Cadiz

Well Gibraltar is unique but apart from the Rock and the odd old military site the place is a weird mix of 1990s Britain but based in a warm climate so not high on my list.

The classic high points would be Seville Cordoba (Malaga) and Granada. Having a car in most of the old cities is a bit of a waste of time as Spain has a great modern public train system and the roads are not laid out for big cars in small roads. Despite this Cordoba and Malaga absorb cars pretty well and a car is useful for seeing countryside and getting about. Cadiz can be included in this sort of area as can Jerez

Madrid and Toledo is another great base but I wouldn't take a car into Madrid.

I've toured in an open top car along the north coast, which has a few great sites, Rioja (for the wine) the Picos d'Europa and vacated villages, ancient monestries to Santiago

I suggest borrow a good travel book like the Rough Guide or even the Fodors to get a good idea of towns you want to see.

Thanks bilbobuglar, whats a good suggestion for the car in the cities. we need the car to keep on the move. We are both mid 60 s, wishing to see as much as possible in the 5 weeks.how long did you take to drive the top of Spain?
