It never fails to amaze me how people can overlook the downsides to Airbnb in terms of how it affects people locally. We live in a ME society these days. If it suits me, never mind how it impacts others.

Clearly, as everywhere else, this is not about renting a room in someone's house primarily, it is about running a de facto hotel for profit.

When people have a party house start operating on their street (see Austin), they may change their minds. Or even just the house next door renting three rooms night after night, never mind half your apartment building housing transients.

The location of the "abieshomes" flat is excellent, naturally, though it is about a block from Opera. The building is also one block from the home of "The Woman in Gold," if that is of interest. You are steps from numerous transportation options (the U1/U2/U4 and several Straßenbahnen), too.

Nearby are two major chain grocers (EuroSpar and the better one, in my opinion, Billa at Ringstraße Gallerien). Within striking distance are several quite good Croatian and Dalmatian restaurants (outside of the RIngstraße); several enjoyable places along Naschmarkt; and others within the Fourth Bezirk (Weiden).

Our trip has been terrific! As mentioned above we did a lot of planning on the fly along the way to take advantage of weather patterns/interesting things we stumbled across/etc --- it has worked out extremely well.

In the end I chose the Opera apartment in Vienna - very happy with that decision. The location could not be better for us -- it's been hot here but it's so convenient to so many sights we can come and go easily back to the apartment to cool off. That and easy access to parking under our building. (it's so easy we've been using the car to get around and today did a day trip to Krems and Melk.)

We did get to Plitvice and loved it - blessed with gorgeous weather there too.

Also spent two nights in Ljubljana - really loved it. Hope to return for a longer stay, but then we've said that about everywhere we've been this trip! Also really loved Krakow.

Off Tuesday for Trebon (Thanks Andrew!) for 3 nights to a more rural setting .... will explore that area including Telc. Then return the car to Prague and Amsterdam for 4 nights. Will do a trip report upon our return but wanted to post this brief update and once again thank everyone for their helpful contributions.
