5*Swissotel in London for less than $100: done!
I am so pumped and had to tell! I was reading biddingfortravel.com, trying to get ready to make my first priceline bid ever, and I came across someone saying they reserved Swissotel the Howard in the Strand for $99 thru the hotel's website. Apparently it's some kind of rate glitch. I hope that doesn't mean they're going to say, "Oh sorry, we have to charge you more than that; it was a mistake," because I quickly went to their website and found the same rate for my nights, and I booked! The rate is 45GBP + about 8GBP/day in tax. I feel like this is too good to be true...maybe someone else can benefit from this rate, too! Website is www.swissotel.com.

We were planning on staying in a condo in London, but I don't think that is going to pan out. We just booked this hotel at this fantastic rate (45.00 GBP per night, plut sales tax/vat 7.87) The site also says this rate is subjecty to 17.5 pct. vat.
Now that we've booked, is this a great area? People on tripadvisor gave positive reviews, but is this area more for businessmen than tourists? I guess there is a tube stop right across the street, so we can get anywhere, but still interested in learning more about the area.

This hotel is near The Strand, which is supposed to be a hip place (I'm 26; am I still allowed to say "hip"?). Here is some info I found on the website about the location (we'll see if this link works): http://london.swissotel.com/
I think the hotel is more for business people, but hey, for a 5* place for this price, I really don't care.

Congratulations! Have stayed there a couple of times - last time I was very please to get GBP 135 including all taxes - It is a nice hotel - great coffee maker in the room. I doubt they would fail to honour the rate - good luck

It says in my London for Dummies book that The Strand is the heart of the West End, close to theaters, shopping, and entertainment...not sure where I got "hip" from...but I definitely had it in my head for some reason. So, Neo, are you saying it's not hip? Sounds busy anyway...too bad...I'd rather it be a quiet area of town. But I guess when you're talking this kind of price for a nice hotel, you can't complain too much.

Yes, it is a busy area and yes it is very close to Covent Garden, the theatres, etc.
I like the area a lot, but the Strand itself is a lot more staid and older -- the Savoy hotel crowd for example.
Don't get me wrong -- it's a great area, and you're only a few steps from Covent Garden (parts which could be considered "hip", Soho, and the like. You'll have a great time.
