a note of caution about trains to Lauterbrunnen from Interlaken-Ost station - beware that the train splits in half at Zweilutschenen, with half trundling up the Grindelwald Valley to Grindelwald and the other half rolling up the Lauterbrunnen Valley to Lauterbrunnen.

So when boarding the train in Interlake be sure you are in cars clearly marked Lauterbrunnen and not Grindelwald - I always see folks scurrying from one train to the other at Zwielutschenen after conductors tell them they are on the wrong part of the train!

Pepper, I will be in Wengen on Saturday, the day of the Jungfrau Marathon. Didn't plan it that way, but that's the way my dates worked out. I'm staying at Hotel Baeren and the wonderful owner told me about the Marathon. She said I probably would not be able to get out of Wengen on that day.

Oh, that is NOT true.

You will be able to get out of Wengen.

Most people will be heading TOWARD Wengen, so you go in opposite direction.

I would go to Schynige Platte or Lake Brienz boat trip that day.

Lauterbrunnen train station will look like a scene out of Dr. Zhivago, but all these people will be heading toward Interlaken (after the marathon) at about 4-5 PM. So you come back to Wengen after 5:30 PM--no problem.

I know the Hotel Baeren. Keith and I were going have dinner there one Sunday night in August, 2010, but their restaurant is closed on Sunday.

Thin---I miss Wengen

I am definitely going to try to get out. I have not been to Schynige Platte so that's on my list. I'm staying 5 nights this time. It's my 4th visit to Wengen and Hotel Baeren. Already been to Jungfraujoch twice, Schilthorn once, but it was overcast. I am going to do it again on a clear day. I took the boat to Brienz and loved it, so I would like to do it again. Yes the restaurant at the hotel is closed on Sunday. I take the half pension so I have dinner at the hotel every night. It is a very good price included with the room. Only 20 CHF per day.

I find Swiss breakfasts to be great deals too - usually included in room price and unlimited buffet style - eat enough to keep going most of the day and not have to buy expensive stuff from stores or at restaurants - the 20 CHF meal is a deal at night i would think.

That's a very important advise. Some people don't pay attention and end up in the wrong half. We traveled from Interlaken several days so we didn't have issues, but we saw people looking like deers at headlights before boarding.

We were in Interlaken 4 days and did lots of hiking, we also took two gondolas and went up to Murren and hiked down, we didn't see too many people with poles, but everybody had some kind of hiking shoes.

Jungfrau was covered every day and we were there the first week of August.
