Luden, near Spui is a favorite of mine, casual and trendy but excellent. Haesje Claes in the same neighborhood is wonderful for "heavy" traditional food. More pricey, but really excellent is d'Vijff Vlieghen (the five flies). You must do a Rijsttafel, and my favorite so far is a little place called Cilubang. One night you should go anywhere in that lively area of restaurants near Leidseplein -- and that can be really cheap. Maybe one of the Greek places.

Trendy ánd good: Mamouche, international with maroccan ingredients. Quellijnstraat 114, de Pijp.

More casual: Kingfisher, just one choice, but always good. Ferdinand Bolstraat corner Quellijnstraat, de Pijp.

Lots of little, nothing fancies, but good surinamese, indian, indonesian restaurant in de Pijp as well.

The best chinese restaurants on the Zeedijk (red light district) as well as a very good thai snackbar, called Bird.

Yam yam for very good and cheap italian food on the Frederik Hendrikstraat.
