5 days to explore Bavaria post 7 day ski trip to Garmisch - Suggestions?!

Greetings, I have 5 days to explore Bavaria after a 7 day ski/explore vacation in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. During the 7 day trip, we plan a trip to see Neuschwanstein, Oberammergau & Linderhof (other day trip suggestions?).
Here is my question: After that part of the trip is finished, we have 5 days before we fly out of Frankfort on the 6th day. Any suggestions?! We thought of 2 days in Salzburg and 2 days in Nuremburg, but we're really open to anything. We're even considering renting a car and driving the romantic road for the 5 days. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Go to Nuremberg and Franconia. Bamberg is a beautiful, well-preserved old Bavarian city that's famous for its smoke-beer and brew pubs; it's not far from Nuremberg, which has an attractive old town and several WW II sites. Nearby Rothenburg, one of the most heavily visited destinations in Germany, is an old walled town that is worth a visit as well. The history of the area is on display at the Franconian Open-Air museum in Bad Windsheim, between Rothenburg and Nuremberg:

Use a "Bayern Ticket" Daypass to reach Nuremberg - 29 € for 2-5 people: http://www.munich-touristinfo.de/Bavaria-Ticket.htm

To get between Nuremberg and the other cities and towns mentioned above, a daypass called the "Tagesticket Plus" will cost your family 15.60€; you can ride trains (and buses) at will with this pass, and you can inform yourself on the details at this page:

BTW, the Franconian museum is open only until Dec. 12.

Russ always has great ideas for that area.

I would add that maybe after snow and mountains you might want to explore a great city........like Munich!

Do not miss the Fraundorfer in Partinkirchen for a fun bavarian evening!!

Agree with Russ about Bamberg and Rothenburg. Other lovely towns on the Romantic Road include Noerdlingen, Feuchtwangen and Dinkelsbuehl. We usually rent a car, so can't tell you if any of these cities are on the train line.

While you are in the Garmish area there are some other great places to visit that aren't on the list above. Mittenwald is only about 10 miles from Garmish. Salzburg, Bertschesgaden and Herren Chiemsee are a bit furter out but still in the area. As BMW said, Munich is a great place to explore.
