Um, not sure there ARE any "must sees" -- there are museums, markets, etc. The "must do" is to recover from jet lag on the beach (and rent a chair -- the beaches are rocky).

I don't think that Nice is a place that will keep you occupied all 5 days, but that depends on the type of traveler you are. There's a lot to do outside of Nice -- you can take an afternoon into evening in Monte Carlo and then a couple of day trips to other places.

More specifically:
Cours Saleya -- marketplace with fruit, vegetables, plants, spices, cheeses, etc.
Marc Chagall museum -- beautiful collection of his work in well-lit building. Be careful and check the hours.
Matisse museum -- same
As someone who's spent a fair amount of time in Nice and the surrounding area, I'd agree that perhaps Nice itself might not keep you occupied for a full five days, but there's plenty to see and do on the entire Côte d'Azur.

To me, the primary "must see" in Nice is the picturesque old town, Vieux Nice, a wedge of land between Place Massena and the Mediterrean. An accompanying "must" is to go to the top of Castle Hill (at the east end of the Cours Saleya) for the view over the red-tiled roofs of Vieux Nice and the grand sweep of the Baie des Anges. The broad Cours Saleya is the location of countless cafes and restaurants, the flower market, and the antiques market.

Nice has a fair number of museums but, IMO, the one "must" is the Matisse Museum.

Near Nice: Antibes, Haut Cagnes, Vence, St.Paul-de-Vence, Villefranche, Eze Village, the Villa Rothschild on Cap Ferrat, the Roman Trophée des Alpes in La Turbie, Monaco/Monte Carlo, Roquebrunne-Cap-Martin, Menton, and many wonderful little hilltowns perched in the mountains behind the coast.

Hi Michele,
Nice is one of the most beautiful places i've ever been.
you should visit the museums: Chagall, Matisse and the museum of modern art.
Enjoy an evening walk along the Promendae des Anglais and along theQuai des Etats-Unis. the old towm with the Cours Saleya for some good food and for the market.
If you like olive oil go to Alziari near the Cour Saleya.
For trips around you should rent a car:
A real must-see is St. Paul de Vence with the Fondation Maeght. you can go to Graase for parfum. In Antibes you should see the Picasso museum.
On the other side of Nice, direction to Monaco you should visit Eze (botanical garden with an breath-taking view. In Monaco you should visit the musée ozéanographique. On the way back: Cap Ferrat.
A beautiful landscape: go by car to Frejus/St. Raphael in the west (highway) and than drive back on the coast line road(?) along the Mountains of the Massif de Ésterel. Maybe you will like St. Tropez, somtimes overcrowded.
For shoping you will like small streets in the old town.
have a good time

You certainly will get a variety of opinions and here is mine. We stayed in the Cote d'Azur for a week, we found the traffic around Nice to be awful. We stayed near St Paul de Vence and after one visit to Nice, tried to avoid the area. All the sites recommended require a car so be prepared for traffic. We live near DC so traffic on vacations we try to avoid. Eze was wonderful, Monaco was fun, we were there the day after the Grand Prix so there were much to see, Cagnes sur Mer (the old city) and St. Paul de Vence and Vence would be worth a drive. Go to St. Paul de Vence before the tourists arrive at 9:30 am. If you have access to beaches in the US then the beaches in Nice aren't great by any stretch of the imagination. The perched villages are much more impressive, you don't see anything like that in the US. The market Cours Saleya was fun and we were there on an off day without the flower market.

Hi I loved Nice, it is a great palce to travel from. Use it as your base of operations. Monaco is worth a visit. And don't miss the Villa Rothchild in St Jean Cap ferat. It is FABULOUS, seven gorgeous gardens, great for photos and watching the yachts sailing to Monaco. Have lunch there too.
