5 Days in Munich

Hello Forum,

We will be in Munich for 5 days in month of May. As of now, apart from seeing Munich (just the main sights), Based on what we read, we propose to do day trips to Regensburg, Rothenburg, Neuschwanstein Castle basing ourselves in Munich only.
would that be a good idea OR should we stay for 3 nights in Munich and then 2 nights in Maybe Rothenburg...

Thanks,

When you say 5 days, are you staying 6 nights or is it 5 nights, 4 days?

It really depends on what you want to see and what your interests are. I am not personally familiar with Regensberg but with you planning 3 day trips from Munich, staying 5 nights would be ideal, 6 would be better if you plan on actually seeing Munich as well. Munich has a lot to offer and often gets overlooked in favor of day trips outside the city.

If you do 2 nights in Rothenberg, that would only leave 1 full day for sightseeing of Rothenburg. It is "enough" for Rothenburg, but you may find you want another full day.

Again, all a matter of what you plan to achieve in each city.

Edit to add: It has been a long time since I went to Rothenburg and I did it from Heidelberg with locals. It is a pretty long trip to do as a day trip. I'd stay overnight in Rothenberg. Better if you can devote two nights. Unless I am misreading the transit, it is about 2.5 - 3.5 hours, depending on method to travel, to go back to Munich. That is a long day in transit (5-6 hours). YMMV.

Thanks,

You're trying to cram too many day trips into a 5 day visit to Munich, as you will only have 2 days for Munich. Rothenberg is a 3 hour drive each way so IMO that's too far for a day trip. Neuschwastein is a shorter drive but you will have to buy tickets in advance so you can be rushed through on an escorted tour. There are other castles in the area such as Hohenschwangau and Linderhof which are easier to get into, but I would still book in advance.

I think you could fill up 3 days in just Munich, then decide which direction you want to go for the other 2 days.

Welcome to Fodors -- we probably do need some clarity about how long you actually have in Munich. As Travel_Nerd asked -- does that mean six nights (which would net you 5 days)?

It sounds like you only have 5 nights total -- if so that will get you four days free for seeing / doing things. Even if it IS six nights/five days you are leaving yourselves almost no time in Munich itself.

All the places you mention can be reached by public transport. Regensberg is a good option for a day trip, there are direct trains to Regensberg (90 minutes), and train/bus combos to Fussen for the castle. I've taken the train(s) to Rothenburg ob der Tauber from Munich many times, but it's a bit long for a day trip, and involves a few train changes. There are bus tours from Munich that include several stops on the Romantic Road, but it's a long day.

I've visited Neuschwastein both by public transport and by tour bus as a day trip from Munich. Of the two, I much preferred public transport - the tour bus includes a stop in Schwangau and Hohenschwangau, and is a very long day.

You might consider a few places closer to Munich, such as Garmisch, where you can visit the Zugspitze, or perhaps a day trip to the village of Mittenwald. The UNESCO town of Bamberg (2:15 by train) is also a good option.

If it were me, I'd defintely base in Munich instead of changing hotels for such a short visit.
