5 days in amboise
 

We will be going to Amboise in a few weeks. My partner has never seen the area, and we will obviously go to Chambord and Chenonceaux. I envision a fairly leisurely trip finding small restaurants, etc. I have looked at the Michelin web site and have gotten some helpful information about restaurants.

does anyone have special places, activities they recommend? we are both in our 60s.

What do you like to do and see?

I wouldn't spend all 5 days in Amboise. Look at a map and see how long the Loire valley is. I have spent a fair number of 5-day trips in the Loire and always split up my time between a few in the eastern end and a few in the western ends. Otherwise, you're just backtracking the same roads over and over. I would split my time between Amboise (or Blois) and someplace like Saumur or Angers.

Besides the châteaux there are troglodyte dwellings (and a troglodyte restaurant), dégustations of wine and cheese (may be too early in the season for cheese, but maybe not), the tapestries (both the ones in the château and Jean-Lurçat) in Angers, the Abbaye of Fontevraud...lots to do. You presumably have at least one guidebook, right?

I liked staying in Chinon for several days, if you consider 1 more location, good for the more western chateaux and Fontevraud-l'Abbaye, burial place of Henry II, Eleanor of Aquitaine & Richard. Or you could stay at the abbey itself which I did for a night and liked it very much. The adjacent village is small, though, so if you like towns, Chinon is better in that regard.

I agree. Chinon is a good mid-way place to stay. We did that one year and loved it. Not so much backtracking in either direction.
