Wow--just checked out the website. Never stayed there but they sure do look great. I love that location right on the north side of the park. I'd go for it. Matter of fact I might next time I go. If you do stay there be sure and post when you get back and let us know!

For our trip to London in the spring I found a very inexpensive hotel in that same neighborhood that looked very nice, but I couldn't find much about the particular hotel online. Further digging made me believe that that area may be not as "nice" as other areas - perhaps lower income and maybe not as safe. I didn't ever go to the area during our trip so I can't confirm that - that was just the feel I got from reading about other hotels located in the same area. I think that's called the Bayswater area, so if you can find comments from others who have stayed in that area it may help you decide. We chose to priceline a hotel elsewhere (Knightsbridge) and were very happy.

Sorry jenifer, but you *absolutely* got the wrong impression about the area. Bayswater is a larger area than Lancs, but it's quite safe. There is a mix of good apartments, small hotels and better offices. (design companies, architects, some administrative offices) The closer you go from the very residential Paddington area to Hyde Park, the better the location. Lancaster Gate is sort of between the two, it's not quite Notting Hill but it's more like that. Now there are some of the hotels that are not 5 star, but even so the hotels are generally better than some of the areas that have problem hotels like around the British Museum, etc. Some of the apartments on the other side of Paddington can be a problem, but ones towards Hyde Park like this one should be great.

I've stayed on that exact same street twice and really like that area. It's hardly some slum or bad area, although not Mayfair, I agree. There are a lot of modest hotels on that street -- sort of faded or rundown English hotels that might be 2*, some in restored townhouses. Some are nicer than others. I stayed at the corner in Lancaster Mornington which is quite nice.

Anyway, that address is across from the Commodore hotel. As I said, the area is good, it's nice to be near the park, there are some good ethnic restaurants nearby on Craven Terrace if you walk north a little and maybe onto Craven Rd and Praed(at least last time I was there--Indian, Italian, etc), and some shops (like a chemist) and it's only a block or two to a tube stop. One nice thing is you can take the Airbus from Heathrow as there is a stop right there on Bayswater Rd at Craven Terrace. Lancaster Gate is really a very short distance from the main road running along the park -- it runs parallel to Bayswater Rd but is less than a normal block from it in distance. That is nice being on that street because it's not that noisy from the main traffic.

Sneezey and Christina - It's very good to learn that area is not as I interpreted from my prior searches!!! I'll keep it in mind for future trips and will not tell my friends to avoid it. :) Thanks for the positive reviews.((f))

Avoid this 49 Lancaster Gate property and London Choice (www.londonchoice.com). We paid a lot of money for a 10 days in a "luxury apartment" and got no wireless Internet; no heat on 2 days; rat in the bedroom and generally unresponsive management.

OK, shoman, I'll bite. You registered simply to dredge up a 2 year-old thread for your first and only post??

Shoman Jan 27th, 2006 09:58 PM

Not a 2 year old thread. Happened this Christmas. Despite numerous calls, emails, etc. to the management I had no response - thought I'd let others know my experiences.

It's a fair point. The original topic made the apartment seem good, but there was no follow up posting. Anybody searching for Lancaster gate may find this topic, so it is only fair for somebody to post their impressions.
