4 x 4 vehicle necessary in Iceland ?
I am still trying to learn more about getting around in late June from Rekjavik to see Gullfoss, Geyser and Selfoss, and from Akureyi to see Gullfoss. We are on a cruise making stops in these towns. Do we need a 4 x4 or can we just get a regular car to travel the roads that lead to these sites ?
Thanks for your help. |
A regular car will work.
|
Thanks Sparkchaser. You have driven in Iceland ? Do you recommend a particular car vendor ?
|
My Euro rental agency of choice is Sixt but go with whoever you feel comfortable with.

oh wow!
you must know there are many roads in Iceland you can't drive with a regular car... I recommend you read this article: http://iceland24.blogspot.com/2013/0...arison-by.html they explain everything about it!!!! |
monica - the OP is only renting cars for a day to go to see the main sights, he's not driving across the highlands!
Andrew - you don't need a 4x4 for the sorts of trips you are looking at. yes, 4x4s are necessary if you're going to do some serious off-roading on F roads, but you aren't allowed to take rental cars on F roads anyway, so it doesn't apply. Most of the cars you see on Icelandic roads are not 4x4s. |
andrew = i see from another thread that you just got back from Iceland.
what sort of a car did you rent and how did it work out? |
Andrew - you've suddenly appeared on several threads mentioning your wonderful car hire.
i think you're advertising. |
well, Andrew, i hope that i can be forgiven a little scepticism given that you suddenly appeared praising a car rental company to the skies, and saying very little else. Thank you for coming back to out the record straight.
i have already been to Iceland hence my contribution to this thread. As there are few trip reports about Iceland, how about doing one about your experiences there? |
Hello,
If you are going to travel around I will just go for a normal car (you dont need a 4x4) I just come back, It was amazing!!!!! |
