4 rather than 5 nights in the Black Forest (July 2017)?
Is 4 nights rather than 5 enough to see the Black Forest? We have booked 5 nights in Gengenbach but I am considering shortening it to 4 nights in order to spend an extra night in the Rhein/Mosel Valleys (I currently have 4 nights booked in Bacharach). We are planning to visit Baden-Baden, Strasbourg and Triberg/Gutach in three day trips. This would mean there would be no space for anything extra if we stay for 4 nights. We will be using public transport.
Can Baden-Baden be seen in a half day as if so we could possibly go there on the day we arrive? We aren't interested in going to any spas. We will arrive in Gengenbach at about 13:00. Should I shorten our stay to 4 nights and is this enough to see the area adequately? Thank you. |
What are yous planning to do with those 4 days in Black Forest?
Maybe you mentioned that in your other thread on your trip -personally I would stay less days in Black Forest and more days in Rhine and Mosel but that is a subjective thing. I think if being into hiking the forest area is great so if into that yeh you could spend a fruitful five days. If going to Baden-Baden just to see the casino and town I'd say skip it- casino tours are great and informative but happen I think only before the great ornate casino opens for gambling around noon - you could always go in as a paying customer but it ain't the same -not sure if they have a dress code or not for all or some of the rooms. No longer going to Trier? Cheers! |
Thanks for replying.
"What are yous planning to do with those 4 days in Black Forest?" Day 1: Arrive in afternoon, visit Baden-Baden Day 2: Triberg/Gutach (Vogtsbauernhof) Day 3: Strasbourg Day 4: ? I'm not particularly interested in seeing Baden-Baden myself but one of our group is intent on seeing the Faberge Museum so I guess we will spend a half day there. "No longer going to Trier?" I'm planning to split our stay in the Rheineland between Bacharach and Cochem so we most likely go to Trier as part of a day trip. |
OK I thought by 4 days in Black Forest you meant in the Black Forest itself - Baden-Baden and Strasbourg are not of course. so if you mean this region of Germany do not forget Freiurg- to me a sweet regional town.
But I'd say if not doing more in the Black Forest 4 whole days is enough. |
IF you decide to keep that 4th day in BF, might I suggest a visit to the lovely town of Staufen, 30 minutes from Freiburg, accessible by rail. Castle ruin a short climb above town, winetastings galore, Dr. Faustus connection, small town square, renowned schnapps outlet, serious cheese shops.

Combine Staufen with a half-fare meandering your hometown of Gengenbach-full of inviting cafes, and the Narrenmuseum (collection of Lenten/Carneval he tips from last several hundred years), housed in a tight tower.
And, you BETTER enjoy Pfannkuchen, the regional version of flat, crispy 'pizza' with cheese, ham, onions etc...mmmmm |
Yes, Staufen is a really nice little town. Here are my pictures of it from 2014:

Thanks for the recommendations. I am now fairly sure that I will reduce our stay in the Black Forest to 4 nights.
We will still have one day though that nothing is planned for so Staufen could be an option for then. |
I enjoyed taking train to Titisee -lovely walks around the lake.
