4 nights in Rome - need help finding lodging
 

My husband and I along with our 2 daughters aged 19 and 20 will be spending 4 nights in Rome this March (first time to Europe). We will not have a rental car so would like to stay in the center of town if possible. Would REALLY appreciate a recommendation for lodging for the 4 of us. Our budget is 150 euros/night (maximum).

Check out Flamini Domus Charming Suites. Not sure how much a quad will cost, but a double with a shared kitchen (breakfast included) is 120 euros in May.

It's centrally located (near Campo di Fiore and Piazza Navina), and reviews on trip advisor are good.

Do you want a quad room? They're hard to find in Europe. And might not be big enough for 4 adults. Consider a 1-bedroom apartment; you could save a little money on meals. Look at www.tripadvisor.com and www.venere.com for hotels. Tripadvisor has rentals also.

Another moneysaver is staying in monasteries. You might be able to afford 2 rooms. Here's a link: www.monesterystays.com.

It's a good idea to stay in the historic center of Rome, especially for your first visit and espcially with 4 people. You save time traveling into the center and back out. And you can drop off shopping, coats, etc., split up, meet back at your room.

I checked Flamini Domus Charming Suites and they do not have availability on our dates. Mimar - you recommend staying in the historic center of Rome. Is there a name for this area that I should be looking for when looking on tripadvisor?

I'm sorry to say your budget is quite low for 4 people - so you may have a problem fining either a family room or 2 regular rooms for that. The area you should be looking at is around the Piazza Navona or the Pantheon.

There's no one word to describe the area of historic center of Rome -- other than Centro Storico. As nytraveler says, look on the map around the Piazza Navona-Pantheon-Campo dei Fiori. If you search this forum, you should find recommendations for apartments and apartment-renting agencies in Rome. Also look at www.slowtrav.com for reviews of individual apartments and rental agencies. When you investigate apartments, be sure to get their exact location; landlords often exaggerate the convenience of their offering.

Our family of four stayed at Arco Del Lauro B&B in Trastevere - it was our favorite lodging on our three-week trip. The quad room is fabulous - large, two twins and a queen bed, nice bathroom. We walked everywhere from there, but also the bus stop is close by. The website says the quad runs from 135 - 185 euros, depending on season. It gets great reviews.

DO check out apartments. Look at sleepinitaly.com, VRBO.com, Italyperfect.com. You have more room, a kitchenette, maybe even 2 bathrooms.

Neighborhoods to look in: Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Campo de'Fiori, or Trastevere. Trastevere is across the Tiber River (that's what the name means) from the main sights, but still right in the area and can be within walking distance to the other areas, depending on the location. Also the buses are easy to take once you get the hang of it.

I don't think there are any hotel rooms for four people in the Centro Storico of Rome. You'll need to increase your budget (if you must have a hotel) or go for an apartment. Or go for a hostel.

I would check out apartments at realrome.com. They have very reasonable prices and the owner is helpful.
