4 hr. layover at Rome airport

Is there anything to see/do around FCO? We have a 4 hr. layover & rather than sitting in the airport all that time it would be nice to go see something close by. I know Rome is too far.

Thanks in advance.

Do you have four full hours that you can be away from the airport?

If so, you might take a taxi -- probably fairly expensive, and you also have to get back to the airport -- to Fiumicino Porto, which is a fairly picturesque small harbour town on the sea.

Ostia Antica?

How the hell do you get into Ostia antica, is what I want to know.

We had time to kill before heading into FCO and drove around the huge walled perimeter of an obviously roman site, trying to get in -- the only openings we found were blocked to pedestrians and motorists alike.

Tedgale, was it in the morning? If so probably the site had not opened to the public yet. I think their winter hours are shorter also.
