4 hours in Bratislava?
 

Hello!

I'm considering making a quick stop in Bratislava during my Budapest - Prague trip. I's a long journey and some people here at the forum sugested me, since Bratislava is on my route.

Well, i saw the timetables from Budapest and to Prague, and i came to this short stay in Slovakia:
arriving at: 12h12
leaving at: 16h20
my questions are:

1. are there lockers in Bratislava's train station?
2. is it easy to go from the station to downtown Bratislava? i read that there's a bus called 61 that passes every 15 minutes.
3. what would you guys sugest me to visit during this quick visit? any special bar/cafe/square? i know it's FAR from enough, but i wanna get a good impression of this lovely country =))

I traveled by bus into the city, so I am sorry that I am not helpful with the train station question.

Once you get to city center/Old Town, it is relatively compact and you can tour the surrounding area to include the St.Micheal's tower, St. Martin's Cathedral, Old Town Hall, Primate's Palace (if you have time) and head uphill to Bratislava castle--great views of the city. The castle was closed when I visited, so hopefully it is open now.

As far as to eat/drink--I cannot think of any specific restaurant or pub, but there are a lot to choose from in Old Town.

Have fun and glad you're giving this city a chance--so many won't!

yeah, i'll be giving a chance...many people aren't, but it's on my route and i was really freaking out about spending whole seven hours inside a train.
i know Bratislava is a very controversial destination, but since i'm having a small opportunity to have my own point of view i wanna make it worth.

and besides, im coming from far, far, way (Brazil) so Eastern Europe is a very destination with so many cultural pecularities that i dont wanna miss.

I agree with what Travel_Nerd has said.

Your best bet is to see the places mentioned byTravel_Nerd in the Old Town Square.

Take a picture in the Old Town Square by the Statue of "Naploean",lean on the bench right beside him the way he is doing !!

I would skip the Castle and do this instead:

1.You cannot miss the single pylon Bridge Tower on the new Bridge.

2.Walk 3/4 ways up the Bridge to the Tower.

3.Pay 3 euros and an elevator takes you to the top.

4.I mean the very top!!! you will outside in the open air !
(Look at some pictures of this Bridge Tower.)

5. The view from here are terrific, better than from the Castle,although I was to both places, and the Castle is also nice but you do not have time to walk up that high hill to the Castle

6. Take some pictures (of course) here from the top of the Tower.

7. Now get back down and head to your Station !!

From the train station I always walk to old town. It takes about 15 minutes. There is no bus right into old town... But one does skirt the perimeter. I will have to look up the number and stop name. You buy a 70 cent ticket from the yellow box right at the stop - you can not miss it. Hit the button twice and you will get 2 tickets, the other for your return. (And I always take the bus back to the train station). You must arrive here with euro coins.

I have never needed a locker, so I do not know. But someone did say they exist (I never noticed them). The train station is a dump, do not despair!

I lived in Bratislava 18 months before moving to Budapest. My husband and I were just talking about moving back last night. (We love Budapest, a fantastic city, but Bratislava was more home ).

Po_dourado, I understand it's controversial (I don't listen to that stuff!). Three years ago I went to Prague, Budapest, Vienna and a short overnight in Bratislava. Bratislava's Old Town is charming and was actually a highlight amongst those cities.

It may not be necessary to spend more than 24-48 hours, but it is definitely worth it. Part of it being somewhat nice is that it is not on the popular tourist route, so it was not as crowded. That may change if those of us on here keep talking about it! ;-)

Three years ago, there was a lot of reconstruction, restoration, and whatnot; so please report back on the progress! :-) Bon Voyage and Enjoy!

I resurrected this old thread as we are putting the finishing touches on our trip through the area. I was just curious what others may be referring to in regards to the "controversy" in visiting Bratislava?

Controversial in being a bit off-the-beaten path and somewhat overlooked by visitors. Otherwise there's nothing too controversial about it. The only thing I can think of is that it's nowadays popular for stag parties.. and some horror movies were filmed there :)

The city's nice so make sure to stop by :) The city centre is compact and easy to walk around.
