From Edinburgh -- either Stirling Castle by train, or St Andrews by train then local bus, or A Rabbies one day tour

I've just talked to a midge specialist in Scotland

Well you learn something every day. I didn't know we had "midge specialists"! Now I'm intrigued, is that what it says on his/her business card ?

Joking apart, millions of people live in Scotland and don't find their lives significantly impacted by the wee beasties. As someone else said earlier, you need a combination of the right climatic conditions and outdoor locations to even be aware of them. Compared to the blasted mosquitoes we had to contend with in our travels in Alaska, and the black flies in Australia, I'd say the midge thing in Scotland is seriously blown out of proportion of this forum, but it's your call.

It really would be a shame if you changed your plans because of the possibility of midges.

There could be a swarm of midges on a footpath/near a lochan/in a car park near a wet area . . . and 300 yds away not a one.

And if there is any wind at all they vanish. If the wind dies -- go in the pub - problem solved.
