4 Days in Provence

Family of 4 spending 4 nights (Wed-Sat) in St Remy, with a car.
Planning to do day trips to surrounding area, before heading Sun afternoon to Nice.
I'd appreciate suggestions for itinerary, including must-see/do's for first timers, tho
I know we have VERY little time.
Interested in food/wine, local markets, moderate am't of history/churches/museums, and picturesque towns/drives.
Thank you!

Don't miss the Pont du Gard (sp?).
An amazing Roman construction in a beautiful setting.Plan on swimming in the summer.

I guess Avignon and Orange are already on your list.

Research Uzes, Arles, Nimes, Montpellier, Aigues Mortes and Sommieres for a trip on the West side of St Remy.

You won't have time to see everything !

I copied this from another thread:

Since the Provence is basically Roman, you will of course see the many remnants of the Romans. IMO, Provence has the best Roman remains, even better than in Rome. You find great Roman monuments in

- Nimes (including the best-conserved amphitheater and a temple in perfect shape),
- Arles (the second-best amphitheater and many more),
- in the countryside south of St. Remy (Glanum and Les Antiques),
- Pont du Gard - a most impressive aquaeduct,
- Orange (the best Greek theatre and much more),
- Vaison-la-Romaine (a huge archeological site).

All these places are pretty close to each other in western Provence.

Avignon is a beautiful medieval city with a magnificent and historically significant Papal Palace. Les Beaux is a picturesque ruined medieval town, located in the scenic Alpilles mountain chain. Aigues-Mortes is a completely walled medieval town. The Camargue is a marshland and natural reserve with wild flamingoes which can be seen with horserides.

The upper Provence has more countryside and villages. Attractions include
- Senanque Abbey (in the middle of lavender fields),
- nearby Gordes is an interesting village, surrounded by the Bories (stone huts) in the fields,
- nearby Roussillion has a colourful ocre canyon.
- the Luberon is a harsh mountain chain with many scenic drives.

Hello,

I lived in Aix en Provence during 3 years. It's a very nice city and I suggest you to visit it. It's a typical Provencal city with many museum (Cezanne Museum is extraordinary), a lot of fountains (wonderful). It's a student city, so people are young and dynamic like the city.
You could hike the high mountain (Sainte Victoire). Aix en Provence is located from 30km of the sea and 80 km from the Alps.

Landscapes are fabulous and there are many bars, restaurants, nightbox.

There's also a typical small village named Ventabren (10km from Aix) very nice with gastronomy restaurant.

I hope my reviews will help you

best,

For some visual ideas, you may want to check the phototravelogue of the 10 days of touring we did last September, at http://www.kodakgallery.com/gallery/...08%3A540606391

Do you have my 27 page itinerary for Provence??? I've sent it to over 1,000 Fodors people. E-mail me at [email protected] & I'll "return" a copy. It also has suggestions for the Cote d'Azur.
