Thanks, jpie, that's reassuring to know about Europcar.

And thank you mikelg! If we stay in Lekeitio for 2 nights, is there a good place for a walk? I had read the description of the walk between Getaria and Zumaia, which sounded like a good option. We aren't hikers so 3-4km as long as it's not too strenuous would be perfect. Would we be able to do this from Lekeitio?

One more question - we won't have a car in Hondarribia so is the Parador walkable from the town or are we better off in Hotel Obispo?

Many thanks! I'm almost there!

Lekeitio has fantastic walks, a pretty one is that going to the lighthouse. 3 beaches, great walks too. I spent 12 summers there with my family, for vacation...despite the rain!

Hondarribia: yes, it´s in the center of town, no worries, an elevator to get there or an easy walk (complicated parking lot, though). Hotel Obispo is very, very close to the Parador. Think of compact cities (Bilbao, San Sebastian...), where everybody walks, we rarely drive inside the city, just use the car to get in and out. Excellent public transport system all over the Basque area.

Fantastic! Any recommended hotels or guesthouses in Lekeitio? I plan on picking up the car after our stay in Hondarribia so not planning on using the parking lot.

Very happy now!

Oxangoiti (16th century house right in the center), Uribarren (on top of the beach, this would be my choice), Palacio Zubieta...not many choices, just check that there´s parking availability. You´re coming in very high season and parking places will be scarce! Also, very curvy roads to get to this beautiful town.

If Autoeurope doesn't have a drop off at the location you want, try their sister company, Kemwel.com

progol,
I enjoy Lekeitio but I admit that I'm not as great a fan as mikelg because I don't have the wonderful memories of family summer vacations there. And parking is a pain in the village.

For me, I find more to do and see in the Getaria area, west of San Sebastián.
There is fantastic dining on grilled seafood, as mikelg says, txakolí wineries to tour in town (Gainza, which is walkable and at which mikelg arranged a lovely tour for us), the interesting Balenciaga Costume Museum, there are walks in the vineyards, one can even walk on the seafront promenade from Getaria to Zarautz and in the rain there are even covered benches along the route, Zarautz is a kind of "mini" San Sebastián with a lively pintxos scene.

One can tour the flysch cliffs by boat from neighboring Zumaia to the west, San Sebastián is easily reachable in 35 minutes by the inexpensive UK10 bus (the Urola Kosta line that goes on the autoroute) for another day trip (I think you might want more than 1 day in SS). https://www.euskotren.eus/sites/default/files/page/Urola%20Kosta%20Invierno%201-9-2018%20%28Bolsillo%29_0.pdf

Getaria also has nice lodging options:
Hotel Rural Gaintza, the winery with nice rooms, San Prudentzio up in the hills, the Casa Rural Usotegui, the sweet Saiaz Getaria with lovely seaview rooms right in town (they'll park the car for you) and the gorgeous Iturregi for a real splurge.

Just a few thoughts...

I would take mikelg and maribel's advice. You can't go wrong either way.

Thanks Egbert! And I have followed Maribel and mikelg’s advice! Decision made - we will fly into Hondarribia for 2 nights, pick up a car, and then stay 2 nights in Getaria. On our way to Bilbao (4 nights), we will stop in Lekeitio.

We will be staying in the Saiaz Getaria (sea room view!) in Getaria- looks charming and was a bit less than the lovely Uribarren in Lekeitio that mikelg had mentioned.

All in all, I think the trip is shaping up nicely!
