4 day South Iceland self drive Itinerary 6/8-6/12

I will be visiting Iceland for four full days arriving morning of 6/8 and leaving morning of 6/12. A cursory search of possible itineraries recommends overnights in Selfoss/Geysir area,Vik and Reykjavik. There are still some guesthouse/hotel availability in each area for my dates. I'm looking for recommendations on how to best split this up then look at what activities I can do in each area. As always all advice is appreciated!

Not sure how early in the morning you leave Reykjavik, but if it is early in the morning - one of the options would be spend the last night near Blue Lagoon( Northern Lights Inn is right near the lagoon) and spend a few hours late evening.

I would suggest doing the golden circle on one of the days maybe 3rd day - Include Gullfoss, Geysir, Thingvellir and Kerid crater. This gives you a taste of Iceland.
So once you've comp, leted the golden circle you could proceed towards keflavik/blue lagoon.

depending on the time that you arrive on your first day, you might be able to drive as far as Vik - it will certainly be light enough. it's about a three hour drive. spend your 2nd day there, or drive to the iceberg lake at Jokulsarlon - it's about 2 hours each way.

on the 3rd day drive to the Golden Circle, [about 2 hours] and spend the day there, over-nighting nearby.

on your 4th day, drive to Reykjavik, spend the day there, and either overnight there, or near the airport, depending on your flight time out. personally I wouldn't bother with the Blue Lagoon itself but wallowing around in mud doesn't do much for me.

An alternative to staying near the airport is to stay here :http://fjorukrain.is/en/

it's at Hafnarfjörður just south of Reykjavik - we had lunch there and couldn't get over the decor - viking meets taxidermist via the western fjords best describes it. I've not stayed there but it looks like fun. and it's only 30 mins from the airport.

We arrive to Kef at 9am from Copenhagen on our way back to the US so we essentially have the full day. I do want to wallow in the mud at the Blue Lagoon some time during my trip, should I do it the first day?
Should I do 2 nights Vik, 1 night Selfoss, 1 night Reykjavik?

as you have a full day on day 1, you would have plenty of time to get to Vik and look around there, seeing the waterfalls at Seljalandsfoss on the way, and then use the second day to do a day trip to the iceberg lagoon. If you tried to shoe-horn the blue lagoon into the day, you might miss out on some of the natural sights, which would be a shame.

The third day you can easily get to the golden Circle and see the sights there before going to Reykjavik on day 4.

What time do you leave on your last day?

if you have time for the Blue Lagoon I would do it then, otherwise do it on your last night and stay overnight near the airport.

I agree - leave Blue lagoon for the last night/day. Overnight near airport gives you the perfect opportunity. A few hours is enough for that. Would suggest to uSe the rest of the time to absorb the beauty of nature in Iceland - Golden circle, glacier lagoon...etc.

I'm sure that you can visit the Blue Lagoon in the rain - after all you are in very warm [naturally heated] water, so the rain shouldn't make a lot of difference.

I don't think that you need to make advance bookings - you just turn up.

You do need to make advance bookings for the Blue Lagoon. The number of visitors has increased dramatically over the past three years and the BL recently announced it was imperative to book.

I would base myself in Vik as has been suggested and try and get to the glacial lagoon at Jokulsarlon, it is well worth a visit.

Also for car hire I highly recommend Cars Iceland. www.carsiceland.com

4 days isn´t much and travel in Iceland can take longer than you think, my advice is don´t try and do too much (Jokulsarlon is stretching it a bit but possible) and just absorb yourself in the stunning landscape!
