30th Bday Solo Trip

I am currently looking for suggestions as to where I should take my 11 day solo trip in June. I was thinking of doing a few days in Rome and then Paris. I have traveled a bit already and although I have fallen in love with everywhere I have been to so far, I would really like to see something new. So far I have been to Iceland, Ireland, Switzerland, London, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Barcelona, Madrid, Nice, Cannes. I am not a shy solo traveler. I have grown very comfortable with traveling solo. I fell in love with Nice and was maybe considering going back and seeing more of the French Riviera with a few days in Paris and flying back home from Paris. But again I wanted to visit somewhere new. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I am open to any and all ideas.

So you only travel to cities?

eevie615 Feb 12th, 2018 02:53 PM

Oh no... I will go back to and discover more of each country. In the past when i have traveled it has never been long enough to see all of one country therefore I have kept to one or 2 cities at a time to be able to really take in as much as possible from those places. So yes I will definitely go back to a country I have been to perhaps not the same cities I have already visited.

Check out Croatia. I did a solo trip there several years ago going to Rovinj, Dubrovnik and Zagreb. I did a few day trips out of each city by bus our train, including a tour to Montenegro. Croatia is so beautiful.

My suggestion: Go to a library and consult some guidebooks.

Good luck!

New, new .... okay how about Turkey? Or Japan if you can get a good flight? Yes it’s long way for a short time. But you’re young. Time for something new.

Nice to Paris you can stop off at Avignon for a few days and take day trips by train or buses to many nearby sights - perfect timefor area in June. Trains are great - for lots on booking your own discounted ticket see www.seat61.com - general info also and where to go by train: BETS-European Rail Experts and www.ricksteves.com.

Portugal is a great option

Hostels are great for 30s types - meet people your age - youth hotels and privat hostels attract plenty your age and have private rooms - Let's Go Europe is a great guide to get descriptions of zillions of hostels.

11 days solo:
Rome/Paris
Rome/Venice
Venice/Paris

... and yes I only go to cities (especially traveling solo, with less than two week's time, and using public transportation, that is my preference).

How about Greece?

PalenQ Feb 14th, 2018 12:14 PM

And there is a Venice-Paris overnight train too - Thello ? Trains France-Italie - site officiel - ultimate time saver for daylight touring time.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions.
Portugal and Croatia are trips that I plan to take with friends before the year end. Greece has always been a dream of mine and my mothers therefore I am surprising her with a mother daughter trip to Greece for next Summer. Turkey is definitely on my list along with Israel and Jordan. I just think that 11 days for those places are just not enough. I am tempted to go back to Nice just because i loved it there so much but I also want to go somewhere I have not been to before. Italy has been my dream forever and I want to see every inch of it. Of course I dont think as a full time working woman I will have the luxury of taking enough time off to see it all in one trip. Therefore I have decided to see Italy in little by little city by city.

I am definitely going to look into this overnight train.

PalenQ Feb 15th, 2018 09:34 AM

Overnight trains ain't for everyone - if never ridden overnight train it can be an experience for sure - usually good but for folks who are light sleepers there is always a modicum of noise from inside and outside the train. Check the rail sites I gave above for lots of info on overnight trains. And book your own ticket at www/thello/com.

Well, make sure you read a bunch of reviews of it - a lot of people seem to have had pretty unpleasant experiences.

How about Sicily or Corsica?

Suki Feb 15th, 2018 09:57 AM

My 27-year-old daughter is taking a solo trip this May to Berlin and then Nice. I was wondering what you loved about Nice, and if you had any tips I could pass along to her?

PalenQ Feb 15th, 2018 12:44 PM

Suki I suggest you start a new thread to get notice for that Q and give a bit more detail - what does daughter like in a place, etc. Lots of reasons to love Nice and some not to.

If Italy is a dream of yours, go to Italy. Maybe the Amalfi Coast? It is not like Nice and the French Riviera but maybe it will resonate similarly?

This could be trip #1 to Italy with more to come as years go by...

It was a longer trip, but I have taken a Bologna-Rome-Paris solo vacation before (in July). I had visited both Rome and Paris several times previously--love both cities. Flew between Rome and Paris. I think a Rome Paris combo would be wonderful.

This past summer I took a three week trip to Venice (1+ week), Dolomites (6 days), Arezzo and Rome (the remainder). Did that one all by public transportation. Again, easy-peasy and terrific.

Sicily, mentioned above, is spectacular, but based on my (admittedly limited) experience on the island, is best with wheels, so could possibly be less easy if you're not comfortable driving and navigating solo.
