30-ish Traveler Looking for Guided Tour Group of Italy
I'm trying to assist a friend who has never been to Italy. He would be traveling alone. Are there any tour groups that are for people in this age range? Are there any recommended companies? Thanks!

Hi AP,
I have not yet found a tour that costs less than doing it myself. Furthermoer, I do not like getting up very early to get on the bus.
I suggest that you tell your friend to get online here.
He can start with Helpful Information: Italy http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...2&tid=34443340

Seeking what time of year? Sometimes there have been spontaneously organized group trips, assembled from people who visit/frequent this forum. I have led one, in 2001, to Italy (my ninth trip to Italy), and I remain eager to do another sometime in the next year.
Best wishes,

If your friend is not anxious to tackle solo travel this trip, I would recommend Rick Steves tours. The group I ran across in the Cinque Terre seemed youngish, active and small. They were having a great time.

I would feel awkward at his age on a group tour. What about a specialty tour? Walking, hiking, biking?
Photography? A university trip? I just can't imagine myself at 30 something on a bus tour where I might have nothing in common with the other travelers.
Painting? Writing? Something?

I'm not sure what time of year he wants to go yet. He's somewhat socially awkward. I think he would like to try and meet people, so he's not interested in a solo trip. Obviously he could meet people solo too, but he's not interested in that at this time.

LOL, Ira.
If he is willing to stay in hostels, he'll meet lots of people. Here's a semi-tour option that is really at the low-end budget range: http://www.busabout.com

If he can afford a Rick Steves tour, that's one I'd recommend. Small groups, mixed ages, moderate hotels, good sense of seeing the countryside and learning about the people.
Contiki has a reputation a drinking, partying kind of thing, so that doesn't seem like a good fit for the person you describe.
I would not try to talk him into going solo, it's truly not for everyone (no matter what many posters here think).
