Hi Ray,
I have to agree with everyone about Florence. 16 years ago it was my favorite city (well second Rome was and still is#1), now it is ALL Americans. In addition to the people visiting and traveling thru you have the cruiselines dumping so many people out at one time. Last year I took pictures just of the crowds, they were unbelievable.
I would cut Milan, turn Sorrento into Positano, spend 2 nights in Florence then go to Cinque Terres for a few days. The area is fun and beautiful. You can hike from one town to another, in the hills, overlooking the sea...wow! or take the train from town to town and enjoy a romantic drink by the sea, which you could do 5 times! . We were only able to see 3 out of the 5 towns, so I am going back in August to see the rest (and the other 3 again!)
Another charming place is Lucca which is near Cinque Terres.
So much to see......
Have a wonderful trip.
Laura
