Some suggestions to help with your planning : Tripadvisor has a 3 day Venice itinerary and so does this website reidsitaly.com. If you trawl through the Europe forum, you'd be able to find much help on Venice from fellow Fodorites. As for dinner, the further you venture away from recognizable tourist restaurants, you'll be able to find some gems, again trip advisor is a good start. Good luck!

My trip in 2010 began with 8 nights in Venice. The trip report should give you ideas about things to do and places to eat.

Silly me--the trip was in 2011.
By the way, can you share your interests? It would be helpful for others to know if you are love/hate in art, photography, walking, relaxing, museums, and so forthe so we can make the best suggestions.

The reidsitaly.com itinerary is good, but it's for 3 days and you only have 2 days so you'll have to make some decisions on what to skip... maybe the day seeing the islands although that would be a shame. It also depends on what days of the week you'll be there as some things are closed or have reduced hours on Sundays and/or Mondays.
