After some research and thinking, I am leaning toward either Seville, Cordoba, or Malaga rather than any place closer to Madrid. Cadiz caught my interest too, but it doesn't have very good train connections. kja made a very good point about Andalucia not being nearly as convenient to get to as Madrid, so I think I should take advantage of being in that area. I'll most likely be going to Madrid in early 2016 for another work thing, so I will probably have the opportunity to see Toledo and/or other places closer to Madrid.

I have a little time to decide, so I'll do a little more research and see what piques my interest more than the others

From Cadiz we took a bus along the coast--don't forget to check bus connections, as it's just as good as the train. I preferred Cordoba and Malaga though--just for ineffable reasons.
