3 days in Lisbon

We'll be in Lisbon in early May and I'm looking for hotel or pension for under $100. Any good recommendations or leads? I will be driving to the Algarve next, where's the best place to pick up the car, airport or town? Thanks.

Airport. Find your way to Vasco da Gama Bridge (Signs: Ponte V. da Gama).

Residencial Estrela do Saldanha: Avda. de la Republica, 17. It's at Metro Lisboa's Saldanha station-stop, exit at Duque de Avila: at the top of the steps, next to Pasteleria Versailles.

He has a web site for the Residencial.

As for 'under $100,' that depends on the Dollar-Euro exchange rate.

The best place to pick up a rental car would probably be Oriente Multimodal Transportation Center (at the Expo-98 site, very close to the VDG Bridge).

I am not certain what the rates will be in early May; however, for late January the rate for a studio at the VIP Aparthotel Eden are at $82.00.

You can't beat the central location, which is directly on the Praco dos Restaurados. The metro stop is 20 feet outside the front door, the tourist office is about 40 feet up the street, the Rossio is less than a block away and the funicular up to the Barrio Alto is around the corner.

I have recommended many people to this place, and all were most pleased with the central location and price.

If you are only spending three nights in Lisbon, this will save you a lot of transport time. Calling the hotel directly always gets you a better rate.

If you put the name of the hotel in the search box, it will pull up addition information on this hotel.

As to your car rental, the pick up point would depend on the day of the week and time of day.

If it is a Sunday, I can suggest a pick-up location off the northern end of the Avendia de Liberdade that gives you a strait, easy shot out of town to the ring road and onto the Vasco de Gama bridge.

If it is not a Sunday, I would do a pick-up at the Oriente Train station rather than the airport. Oriente is close to the airport, but reachable by metro rather than having to take a bus or cab back to the airport.

Also, keep in mind that airport pickups are 15 % more expensive because of the location surcharge.
