3 days fjords

am flying into Oslo and then starting the 4th day, have 3 full days with my family before flying out on the 4th day.

My children are 2 and 5 years old.

At first I was considering spending the time in Oslo and taking a day for the Nutshell tour. However, given the pace and crowds of the Nutshell tour, I am now considering doing the full 3 days by renting a car and going to Lustrafjord at a leisurely pace. While it would be unfortunate to miss the sights of Oslo, it seems equally unfortunate to miss the beauty of the countryside and I think for a short trip, we must choose.

This, is there a recommended round trip itinerary? Perhaps arriving at the fjord via northern route and returning on the nutshell path? Are there nice places to stop en route to break up the journey or to stay for a night so that the kids are not in the car for very long stretches?
