3-day Classical Greece Tour
Has anyone done this tour (Delphi, Olympia, Mycenae)? How were the hotels? Were the included meals decent? Would you recommend the tour or not?
|
I don't know this specific tour, but trying to do those three sites in three days seems odd to me. All three are on completely different sides of the country. There'd be so much travel time that I can't imagine there'd be much time at the actual sites.

The sightseeing was excellent. There is a lot of driving between destinations. The hotels (Amalia) were barely acceptable, 1 was like summer camp. The meals at those hotels were also barely acceptable. I'm conflicted as to whether or not I would recommend this to you. As I said the sights, bus, guide and driver were excellent. I wonder if some tours offer better hotels with more desirable meals. We went with Club ABC which subcontracted with a local tour company.

Thank hou JuneAnn. I had almost given up on getting any responses. I'm thinking we will chance it and hope the hotels/meals are tolerable. I'm glad to hear you liked the sights, guide and driver.

I must have stayed at a different Amalia in Delphi, because I really liked it. The pool was very nice and I thought the breakfast buffet was SPECTACULAR. The hotel itself is made of stone, so it is cool.
I can't remember the name of the hotel I stayed at in Olympia, but it looked like a ski lodge. I loved the museum in Delphi that exhibits the One Armed Charioteer. |
marg: I stayed at that same place in Olympia, I think, because I remember thinking "this looks like a ski lodge." But I can't for the life of me remember the name either!

I took a four day classical tour which covered the same sites and also went to the Meteora. I really enjoyed it, saw wonderful sites. The bus rides weren't bad and went through gorgeous scenery. At least on the tour I took, the sites were visited in the morning and the driving was in the afternoon.
The hotels were fine, nothing fancy but all had really nice views over the countryside, especially in Delphi. The suppers were nothing to write home about but not bad either. In some towns it would have been possible to walk to other restaurants. This was true in Delphi, but the hotel in Olympia was farther from town and it would have been hard to get anywhere else for supper. The tour was run by GO Tours, and I arranged it through Fantasy Travel in Athens. I describe the tour at length in my trip report, which also includes a few days in Athens: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34589254 Photos: http://www.kodakgallery.com/I.jsp?c=...&y=-b9k6sz |
Thank you everyone for your good information and a special thank you to Nikki. Your trip report of the tour was excellent!
