3-4 Star Hotel in Paris St. Germain for belated honeymoon?
My husband and I will be spending four nights in Paris from June 10th-14th,2003. I was lucky enough to win some money on a game show so I want to splurge a little on the hotel since we never had a honeymoon when we got married 2 years ago. I'd like to spend no more than 250 (US) a night and have a nicer room maybe with a small balcony. Everyone seems to love St. Germain so thats the area I'm targeting (seems central too) but since this is my first time to Europe I'm a little nervous about my choice.
I've contacted le Madison which seems a little expensive but am hoping for a standard room there. Also the Hotel le St. Gregoire looks interesting but I'm seeing ALOT of mixed reviews of that. Can anyone offer up a perfect solution? Of course, I dont HAVE to spend that much but my husband is kind of a cranky traveller and I'd like to have a nice room to appease him with. |
Hi
I haven't stayed at these places, but they all been praised here or elsewhere also look at the fodors.com hotel rants and raves comments don't know about balconies Regent's Hotel (rue Madame) Hotel du Danube Hotel de Fleurie Hotel Madison I have stayed in the beautiful hotel d'Aubusson, but I think a superior room is going to be over your budget, but do inquire A standard room might be considered too small by your husband. Still, a wonderful hotel. I have a file on Paris; if you'd like to see it, email me at [email protected] |
Lucky you:
I can't give any specific advice on hotels in this price range, but would recommend that you look at tripadvisor.com, because it consolidates a lot of reviews from different publications, includes user reviews, and it links you to some other sites that allow you to see photographs of the hotels and check prices. |
I can't offer you a perfect solution, and don't stay at that level of hotel myself in St-Germain so probably don't know as much as others who have -- but I think you might consider the Millesime in your budget, a lot of people like it, as well at Hotel l'Abbaye. I think the Madison should be fine if you get a good room from what I've read. I think a couple of Elaine's suggestions would be good, like Fleurie, but the Regent on rue Madame is really more a moderate 2* hotel than what you want, I believe. Oh, also consider the Relais St-Sulpice, it would be in your range, I'd guess. Of course there is also the Artus which used to be Hotel Buci Latin if you like modern/hip. Good luck.

Suezanna,
I highly recommened hotel le Madison you mentioned above; the location is perfect & the deluxe rooms are really nice, I felt like it was four star quality. The service was great... I really felt the staff went beyond the call of duty, going as far as taking my purchases from the flea market to be professionly packed. There is a good full buffet breakfast, a rare,in Europe. I really do not think you can go wrong here. viva la France Fluffy |
Both the Millesime and le Regent (rue Dauphine) have gotten good reviews here. Take a look at the www.france.com website for rates and comments (they both have rooms for your dates):
Millesime http://digital.france.com/hotels/hot...l?HotelID=9471 Regent http://digital.france.com/hotels/hot...l?HotelID=9377 I would book a superior double to be assured of a good room. The booking service is wonderful and easy to use. |
We have stayed at both the Millesime and Hotel de Fleurie. The last few times we chose the Fleurie. Both have nice rooms (small, but they all are and we are not in them much). Efficient and friendly staff, Fleurie staff was somewhat more helpful. Good locations, not as noisy as some in the 5 - 6th. http://www.hotel-de-fleurie.tm.fr |
Hi Suezanna,
We always stay at the Hotel Bonaparte, 61 rue Bonaparte, but it is not as fancy as you are requesting. Here are a few suggestions: HOTEL Des Jardins du Luxembourg about 145E for a superior double http://rentoparis.com/hotelparis30515.html HOTEL Ferrandi about 200E for a lux http://rentoparis.com/hotelparis30620.html Hotel Saint Germain des Prys http://www.123france.com/europe/fran...s/hosgerus.htm |
If you can get a reservation, the Angleterre on Rue Jacob is lovely. One of the rooms we stayed in had very small balcony overlooking the street. It was more a big window with a railing than balcony, but the Angleterre is very Paris. Difficult to get reservations, but travel is down now, so you might be lucky. We have also stayed at the Buci Latin (now Artus, that I didn't know), funky, good breakfast and very helpful, and the least expensive of the ones mentioned. The Madison is also nice so you can't go wrong.

We stayed in the Hotel St. Gregoire last year and loved it. We had one of the rooms with a small patio and it was great for breakfast and relaxing after a day on foot. The bedroom appeared to have been recently painted and the bathroom was very nice. The size of the room was average by Paris standards. The front desk staff was very helpful and the hotel was quite centrally located, close to the Metro stop. I would highly recommend the St. Gregoire.

The Hotel Parc Saint-Severin, a *** rated hotel, has a penthouse suite with terrace for 260E. It is well sited in the 5th arr. See if it is available (you are rather late to be booking for June!). Good luck! JP

If your visit to France were on July 5th and 6th, the**** Victoria Palace in the 6tth aronndissement is offering a discounted rate of 230 euros per night for a deluxe room. This includes breakfast and hotel taxes. This hotel is located between Saint-Germain-Pres and Montparnasse.
The hotel can be contacted at [email protected] and their website is www.victoriapalace.com This is a deluxe hotel and was completely renovated in March 2000. |
Thanks so much to everyone for their suggestions. I've sent out inquiries to most of the hotels you have requested and surprisingly pretty much all of them have ample avail. The only one I haven't heard from was le Madison, so I'm anxiously awaiting that one.
I just got Rick Steves book and he highly recommends the Hotel Axial Beaubourg which is not really in my location but seems nice. Anyone have rants or raves? I know I'm a little late to be booking in June but we just got a flight last week so I'm doing the best I can. Thanks for all the replies...I'll keep everyone posted. |
We stayed at the Hotel d'Angleterre last October and did not like our room. It was one of the larger rooms that overlooked the courtyard. Quite a few people have reported that their rooms were great, but sadly to say our expectations were greater than what this particular room offered. It had peeling paint and mold around the bathtub. It was not an inexpensive rate either-248 euro/night. And the hotel's policy is one night's deposit to be sent via personal check.
There are other guests' comments on tripadvisor.com, the majority of comments focusing on the lack of maintenance nowadays. It could be that some rooms are well-maintained while others are not. In my opinion, if you want a truly charming, well-maintained hotel try the other recommendations above but not Hotel d'Angleterre-esp. not with those high rates unless you want to take your chances. |
I have to suggest the Hotel d'Aubusson. I just stayed there for a week for an anniversary. It was perfect for us in every way.

Suezanna,
I am going to put in another strong vote for hote le Madison. viva la France. Fluffy |
Fluffy,
Do you remember whether le Madison has a/c and/or an elevator? My husband made me ask these questions and I couldn't find it anywhere on the websites... Is there a way for me to politely ask in a non gross american way how big the beds are if I call the reception? thanks so much for all your help and replies! Suezanna |
Dear Suezanna,
Do not worry about being a gross American, you obviously are not. Yes the hotel has an elevator, I do not remember about the a/c as the 2 times I have been there it was fall, but I would be really surprised if they don't. This is a very nice hotel,I consider it to be way above the standards of many 3 stars hotels I have been to in Paris. It has American standards without loosing its charm; it does not feel like a chain hotel,I have always received gracious service& no request has been too large or small. I have referred many friends to the Madison, & they all loved it. No I do not work for this hotel...but I believe in passing on treasures if I can. As for bed size I had a double, you can ask if they have Kings, my guess is that they do.Again do not worry about being a forward American, the staff is very accomidating. There is a lovely lobby with a small bar & sitting area, also a nice buffet breakfast, I think you can request it served in your room if you wish. Best of luck Viva la France! Fluffy |
What a shame the Angleterre is not keeping up the hotel. Having a travel forum like this one lets us keep up with the latest news. Now I'm glad we were not able to get reservations at the Angleterre on our last trip.
|
Elainee, it is sad that d'Angleterre has been inconsistent in the maintenance. It was pretty disappointing to me as I expected better especially knowing that I could have reserved our room down the street at either Danube or Millesime or up on Blvd. St. Germain at Le Madison but passed them up in favor of d'Angleterre.
