Another suggestion, a hybrid "city/country" expereince, is to take the train to York. Spend a day or two seeing this medieval walled city, then rent a car and tour rural Yorkshire...either north Yorkshire moors and/or the Yorkshire Dales.
Train trip is about 2 hours from London. You can rent a car at the York rail station.

I would spend a few days in South Wales. The costline around Pembroke and Tenby is beautiful and unspoiled and the small villages, farmhouses, etc are very quaint. Relatively few tourists here unlike the Cotswolds so you are seeing real working towns not towns preserved or restored for visitors. Some of the best castles can be found here as well. Only about a four hour drive from London. I would suggest maybe a couple nights in Tenby and then a night in the Brecons around Abergavenny.

THANK YOU for recommendations within UK...hadn't really considered staying in UK...but may now since I have done little traveling in the countryside...it does sound fantastic....depends on time frame. Was thinking intially about flying out of UK...have done short flights to Amsterdam, Dublin, etc. and Eurostar to Paris on past trips.
Wasn't sure if there were any other short flights like that? And, where? Worth it, etc.? Please advise...

Brussels is another easy one; about three hours city center to city center by train from London. Great food, interesting sightseeing in the city, or take a day trip to Brugges from Brussels.
In Great Britain, I would also recommend Cornwall or North Wales as well as the other destinations that have been suggested.
