OK i just got off the train from salzbuirg and i am in munich. I went to buy my ticket to Prague but guess what they wont sell me a first class ticket because its to close to departure, now i am on a night train to prague in 2nd class and i am having second thoughts. should i head directly to berlin then go to prague? or just grin and bear it in second class???

Is your concern an overnight train in 2nd class, or just 2nd class period.

I always travel 2nd class on German trains and find them just fine, although I haven't taken an overnight in ages - usually just 2-4hr rides.

According to the German rail website (www.bahn.de), the best (fastest, no changes) train to take is the 16:44 departure from Munich, arriving in Prague 6hrs later. There's also a 6:43am departure , arriving in Prague around 1pm.

If you are concerned about arriving after dark, I'd stay the night in Munich and take the early train to Prague the next day.

That way you can leisurely navigate your way to hotel or hostel in daylight hours.

Hi L,

Are you in a 2cl couchette on the 23:07 or a 2cl seat on the 16:44?

Since you've never tried 2nd class before (?) why not go ahead with your ticket. Then you'll know what it is like, instead of wondering. Are you in a seat or a couchette?

Do you mind if I ask another question, I'm curious where you are writing to us from on your trip? Do you have a computer or are you using internet cafes?

I am at the "easyinternetcafe" right across the street from the Munich train station. Since i am traveling alone my friends and family want emails 2 times a day.
I have a second class seat.

Hi L,

You have a 6-hr ride.

Buy some food, drinks and snacks.

Keep your passport, credit cards and money on your person.

Read your guidebook or bring along a book.

You should not have any trouble.

In German, NO is "nein" and Yes is "Ja".

Good luck on your train ride & let us know how it turns out! I think I'd rather have a seat than sharing a couchette with strangers anyway. Don't forget to pack some snacks and a bottle of wine.

I like visiting internet cafe when i travel (I don't use them quite so often, but it is a good way to keep in touch when you're traveling solo).

I dont know if this is being a newyorker or just being american, but I bribed the train conductor and i got a bed in first class!! the trip was great except the train spilt at one point and we were pushed and pulled. but I arrived.
I found a hotel then I proceeded to get lost for an least an hour trying to find the charles bridge, but i found it! I will be staying here for the next two to three days, i still dont know where i want to be for christmas. I just posted pictures to my blog.
