27 sept in Rome: la notte bianca

On 27th Sept in Rome, from 10 pm to 8 am of the following morning Rome City Hall together with the Mayor of Paris have organized this event: LA NOTTE BIANCA. Rome will be open all night: libraries, shopping centres, churches, cinemas, private galleries, cultural institutes, institutions, state and private museums will be open. In particular it will be possible to visit PALAZZO FARNESE (French Embassy), normally not accessible to tourists, its courtyard and l'Accademie Francaise (Villa Medici). All means of transportation between 10 pm and 8 am will be free and will be increased in frequence.
If somebody is going to be in Rome during this time....take andavntage of that and...ENJOY!

Hi,

Sounds like fun but do you know why this is happening?

Doesn't LA NOTTE BIANCA mean the night white, or the white night?

Help a white girl out

Thanks, E

Thanks

As far as I have heard, this is a kind of twinning between the city of Paris and that of Rome, this is why for example they are opening the Farnesina which normally is not accessible to the public unless you have a special pass or a french passport in I am not wrong.
Yes it means the white night. In italian when we say: " ho passato la notte in bianco" we mean that we have had a sleepless night. So I think this might mean that, as the event will take from 10 pm through the morning, people will be likely to spend a sleepless night in order to see things and shop around.
Look I have found the web site of the event: www.lanottebianca.it
there is also an english version and you will have plenty of info about that.

Notti Bianche = White nights .
When sun never sets.
i.e. White nights in St.Petersburg.

This event will end, the next morning, with a concert upon the Gianicolo hill facing the sunrise.

Have you ever lived the long night of museums in Berlin ? It's just a chance to live better the city at night.

Sept 27th is also World Tourism Day, according to the Vatican website, which means that admission to the Vatican Museum is free. It's also free on Sun, Sept 28th (it's always free on the last Sunday of the month).

Bummer. We get into Rome the morning of the 27th. It will be a challenge staying up that late! The good news is we are staying on the Piazza Farnese, so a visit to the embassy will definitely have to be made.
