25th Wedding Anniversary and Turning 50
We would like to go to the AMALFI COAST and ROME, we will be traveling with our TEEN daughter's (13 and 19).We are planning to travel in July 2012 for 9 nights. We have found direct flights out of Toronto to Rome for 1100.00/person. We cant decide on accommodation's villa or hotel? We have a budge,t and want to be very active every day!!
Looking for a good itinerary

Assuming you have 9 night IN Italy (so excluding travel days):
Arrive in Rome, train/ferry/driver immediately to Positano. Stay in Positano 4 nights.
Train/ferry/driver back to Rome where you will stay 5 nights.
Fly home.
You absolutely do not need a rental car. A rental car is a HUGE liability and expense in Rome and on the Amalfi Coast. Trains, buses and ferries will get you everywhere you need to go.

Arrive in Rome, train/ferry/driver immediately to Positano. Stay in Positano 4 nights.
Train/ferry/driver back to Rome where you will stay 5 nights.
Fly home.

Pam, what do YOU like to see / visit / do during this trip? Itinerary and locations depend on what you want to visit and on your budget. So, nobody can make suggestions without knowing these things.

I agree with the 5/4 timing and starting on the AC, but WHERE on the AC is the question---Sorrento or Positano or Amalfi?
I can argue for each.

HOW TO GET THERE: You have to want to—it may not be easy. The best option is to land in Naples, but that is not always feasible. Most travelers access it from Rome by train to Naples—a trip of less than two hours. Once in Naples, you have a choice. The local commuter train, Circumversuviana, leaves from the same train station and takes about an hour to SORRENTO, with a possible stop at “ Pompeii Scavi” to see the famed ruins. However, to access any of the coastal towns you must then take a SITA bus or a taxi.
The best option is to hire a private driver to meet you at the Naples station or airport and take you directly to your hotel. Expect to pay about 100E.

SORRENTO is really on the Bay of Naples and not the Amalfi Coast [AC], but is the most convenient location for day trips to Pompeii and the Isle of Capri. The town is larger & relatively flat. In contrast, POSITANO is the most spectacular village on the AC but is almost vertical and a real challenge for your legs.
Hotel choices in Positano should be evaluated by their location in town relative to the beach or position on the hill above the beach. AMALFI & RAVELLO are other popular destinations but are further down the coast.
NOTE: Any of the drivers above can be hired for day trip excursions but should be booked well in advance. Expect to pay about 35E/hour.
Here are my top five activities for this fabulous coast:

• Day trip to Capri by hydrofoil from Sorrento or Positano—in season

Pam, having a car on the A/C is both a hazard and a waste of money. There is LOTS of public transport to take you everywhere you want to go. Parking is very difficult to find and expensive, not counting the terrible traffic (think if a tiny 2-lane road clogged with big buses). If your budget is a concern, then do not rent a car.

Pam, I have to admit you may need to think about this. I agree that a car may not be your best solution. It will be a zoo in July on that coast and a car will not be easy.
I do not like that hotel location at all. It is on the hill above Amalfi and is somewhat isolated for day trips. And, even the location of Amalfi is at the far end of where you want to be. What are your plans? Do they include Pompeii and/or Capri? The good news is at least the ferries will be running in July. Why not let Luca at Summerinitaly.com find you an apartment for 5 nites---may not be easy this late.
I also think you can do better for location in Rome. Have you looked for QUAD rooms, or are the kids too old for that?
Look at Hotel Mozart which has quad room and even apartments. Alos, check out Palazzo Olivia near Piazza Navona for nice 2 bedroom apts.

Again, you must decide your overall location--big differences.
Sorrento is most convenient but more of a flat tourist city.
Positano is the most spectacular but not cheap. Here is more on hotels, but I am serious about letting Luca find you a place---but, you must decide WHERE.
