25th anniversary trips-where did you go?

Okay-my husband and I are celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary at the end of the month and I would like some suggestions on where the rest of you have gone for your 25th anniversary? I would like to plan a trip for the two of us somewhere overseas that we could take in the middle of September to celebrate the BIG 25! I have a mom who has had alot of serious health problems the past 4 years (and I am the only child) so my husband and I really haven't had a real vacation together as someone usually has to be home "just in case".Perimeters for this trip would include: no regular type cruises;
relatively inexpensive as he is retired and his pension maybe gone soon;
we still have a child in college that we pay tuition on;
about 1 week to 12 days duration;
we both love history;museums;outdoors,etc.
So anyone want to chime in? Thanks for any tips!

We wandered down the west coast of Scotland. We started in Port Appin at teh Pierhouse Hotel for two nights; we crossed to Mull and stayed in the Western Isles Hotel for 2 night, and visited Iona, we went from Oban to Islay and stayed in the Port Charlotte Hotel for 2 nights, then we went to Loch Tay and stayed in the Ardeonaig Hotel for two nights.

Apart from the Western Isles, which was bowff, it was lovely. And teh scenery was top and so was the sightseeing

It might help to know where you would have to travel from and where you have already been.

I guess Sheila already has this information but many of us obviously do not.

Do you live in Europe or US? In other words, which is "overseas"?

Hi DF,

I suggest a week in Venice or Paris.

Happy Anniversary.

In 2002 my husband and I went to France and Italy to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. It was wonderful. We did Paris, Rome, Venice, Tuscany, Loire Valley. I highly recommend Italy and/or France since there are so many museums, historical building but also a lot of romantic things to do.

We went to Oaxaca, Mexico, a "World Heritage Site", and to Puerto Vallarta for R & R. Coming from the NE of the US in January, this was a great winter escape trip. Visited the archaelogical sites of Monte Alban and Mitla. Rufino Tamaio Museum with an important collection of pre-Columbian art. Oaxaca has many buildings from the Spanish colonial days, arts and crafts markets and an interesting cuisine.

We celebrated our 25th by taking three weeks to visit Ireland, Wiltshire, Cornwall and London.

Ireland because my husband's grandfather came fr. County Mayo and we wanted to find the place where he lived and perhaps any living relatives. It was a hoot. And we not only found the homestead, but also a cousin and great aunt.

Then we renewed our vows at Stourhead Gardens in Wiltshire - it is our favourite place in England. We each wrote our own vows and picnicked by the lake, drank champagne and recommitted ourselves to each other. We had dinner at the Spread Eagle Inn then travelled to Cornwall for our 'honeymoon'.

We stayed at a cottage in St. Mawes and explored all the villages north, east and west of us. It was lovely.

Then ended our trip in London - which I love and my husband tolerates. But I dug around and came up with things that I thought he might be interested in and it was perfect. He can't wait to go back this fall!!

Have a wonderful time wherever you go. Twenty-five years nowadays is something to celebrate. We are going to Italy this year to celebrate our 30th.

We went on a tour--the last one by bus we'll ever take! A friend of ours used to sing with the San Diego Master Chorale, and the group (about 150) was invited to sing in several venues in Austria and Switzerland. So we tagged along and had a very nice trip, seeing Salzburg and the beautiful area between there and Vienna. Then we headed back to Switzerland, ending in Munich. After that my husband and I spent several days in Garmisch-Partenkirken on our own.

Now that I've been on a European river cruise, that's what I would recommend. Check out Grand Circle tours, and don't be put off the the several posts from disgruntled customers.

P.S. When I was on the cruise last December the nice people on the GCT staff decorated the doors of newlyweds and honeymoon couples and toasted them at dinner.

Sorry Intrepid-I live in Chicago and meant overseas to be Europe or surrounding areas.My husband and I have traveled quite a bit of Europe when single and through the years yet there are still quite a few places that need to be seen.(He was in Vietnam so isn't interested in Asia as he flew all over that area during the war.) I quess that I was looking for something really special because of the 25 years? I would still appreciate anyone's suggestions or thoughts on those"wow-what a wonderful place to visit" spots! Thanks-

Not Europe, altho we've been a number of times,but we went to Hawaii. I still think it's one of the most romantic places ever.

If I had to choose a place in Europe to spend a special anniversary I think I'd choose Scotland. It's glorious.

Hi. My husband and I went to Sicily for our 25th, BEAUTIFUL but expensive. But last year I travelled (alone!)around the Lake Como region in Italy, staying in Menaggio and visiting Varenna and Bellaggio (minutes away by ferry) and walking in the hills surrounding the area. I thought it was the most beautiful romantic area and quite inexpensive. I had a lovely little apartment in Menaggio with nice lake views which I booked on the net, and I found train and bus travel to be very cheap and timetables geared to suit the tourist. Flew into Milan and travelled by train and ferry from there. Loads of culture/history/outdoors to be found in the lovely cities within easy reach of Milan if you wanted to combine a few days there as well as the Como region.

Molly-although we have been to Sicily I had thought of the longer drive/stay that you did for your 25th in that beautiful country. One question-why did you think that Sicily was expensive? I have always found it to be a "deal" in terms of how far the dollar goes.Any other suggestions-thanks!

Looking back, maybe it was because we stayed in Taormina which is sort-of the tourist hub in Sicily and we booked a slightly more expensive package holiday than we normally would on account of it being our 25th. So you could be right, - it may not expensive for the type of independent travel that you have in mind. Also we would have being coming from a Euro (I'm Irish), not Dollar base so that might have been in your favour. Let us know where you decide to go for the trip!

We went to Australia and New Zealand. We had to go a few months after our anniversary date, when I could get off work and it was summer over there. We were gone for 15 days. It was wonderful. We did our research before we went and managed to do everything.

September 2005, we started our 25th anniversary trip in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland, then went to Venice and renewed our vows on a gondola (with some great wine), Cinque Terre, Rome, Sicily, and sadly back home. It was an awesome trip. For our vow rewewal, right before we left, we quickly arranged with Destination Venice to get us a tour guide (thankfully she spoke English - in fact she was American) who could read our vows for us (so we could say the "I will" and 'I do" parts) as if she were the minister; we also had them provide a photographer who took pics of us while on the gondola and when we went to St. Mark's. It was truly memorable.

For 25th we went to Ireland, and among other things, we went to the Thomas Dillon shop in Galway and bought a claddagh ring to celebrate. For 30th we went to Venice, with a wonderful gondola ride. Both trips were wonderful, and Paris is always fantastic for a special date.
