24 hours in Vienna - recommendations please

Hi - so we are leaving our 18 month old and getting away for a weekend. Means we only have c24 hours in Vienna accounting for travel time etc and I was wondering if I could please get recommendations on must do / see things please. Will be there this weekend Just checked the Opera House and seems the Saturday night performance is sold out or has only a couple of separate €200 seats so may try the standing ones but not if it takes up 6 hours of our short trip. Any alternatives to the Opera?
Thanks all.

AlokG, not knowing much else about your interests, I would suggest looking at this site, http://www.wien.info/en, for both the "Event Highlights" on the left sidebar, and the Events calendar on the right to help you make the most of your time.

As for the opera, the SRO tickets don't require you to remain for the length of the performance; however, you will have to queue at least an hour before the performance in the hopes of securing standing-room tickets. Something to consider on a short holiday.

Hi AlokG, I have put together six itineraries to spend 24 hours in my hometown Vienna - you can view them on http://www.vienna-unwrapped.com/24-hours-in-Vienna.html

There is 'Countess Maritza' on at the Vienna Volksoper this Saturday - a hilarious operetta. Tickets: EUR 74 (http://viennaoperatickets.com/operet...p=41&l=2&id=87) Volksoper is still much of an insider tip for travellers. I love operettas - they are so Viennese.

Not to hijack the thread, just to add to Barbara's comments that I really enjoy her website. As an ex-pat living n Vienna, the site is part of my resource collection for "what to do" when I'm feeling schloss-weary. Thanks, Barbara, for spending the time you must to put together this resource. :)

Barbara - what a great website. looks like a labour of love.

We enjoyed our few days in Vienna but I wish I'd seen your website before we went - I get the feeling that we would have got even more out of our stay.

I wasn't that crazy about Vienna but the main thing I liked was their musical instrument museum (one of the best in Europe) and the fine arts museum. I don't like opera so wouldn't go to that, anyway.

thanks all -

barbara - might this be a suitable alternative

we may try get tickets to the opera on the day but if that doesn't work - don't want the evening to be wasted so wondering if this may be one of the things to do.

thanks again
