24 hours in Stockholm

We are traveling on SAS and they are letting us spend 24 hours in Stockholm before our connecting flight. Read they have a 20 minute nonstop train from the airport to downtown. We can get a hotel reservation at a reasonably priced hotel near the Arlanda Airport, but we have to take the shuttle bus from the airport to the hotel and the shuttle bus again back from the hotel to the airport. Know there is a hotel in the airport but it is full. With this very fast train, is there any hotel with in walking distance Stockholm Central Station? Is Stockholm Central Station within a sensible walking distance of most attractions? Or can we connect to public transportation from Central Station?

Just trying to figure out what would be the most efficient way to handle our small stopover. We arrive at 7:45am and depart the next day at 10:10am.

The Stockholm central station is right at the heart of the city and there are several hotels within a few minutes of walking from the station. The Radisson Blu Viking hotel is at the station. Many Stockholm attractions are reachable by walking or short public transport rides from the station.

I can report that they now have taxis in Stockholm. Set fare to and from the airport: 500 krone. I caught one yesterday. It took 30 minutes. May I respectfully suggest you use one and stop complicating your plans with unnecessary grief.

There is a fabulous Sheraton three blocks down from the Central train station, you can get back and forth from the airport super quick on the Arlanda express train. Look for sale prices on the Internet. Stockholm is gorgeous and you should take advantage od your time to get into the city. From the Sheratony you can walk to most of the sights in the harbor. Have fun. We were there last July.

Also, this previous thread gives good info on the various means of transport to/from Arlanda. Lucky dogster in a luxury taxi, the most expensive alternative - and if stuck in traffic, not the fastest either.

Hope you have an 'underbar' 24-hours in beautiful Stockholm!

At the station where the Arlanda Express arrives in town there are also the 2 Nordic Hotels, the Light and the Sea. Both could be interesting, too:

Thanks to everyone. I'm going to check these suggestions out right now. MBW

Err... that would be $66 for the 'luxury taxi' versus $45 for the train, furry. lol.

For the O.P. - don't miss the Vasa Museum. Really, don't miss it.

Or half price on the Arlanda Express if they are seniors..

mbw220 Jul 13th, 2010 02:29 PM

Yes, we are seniors: 65 & 67. Is that considered a senior in Sweden? Can we just show them our passport to prove our status, or do we need some type of special identification?

They'll probably assume it automatically unless you really don't look your age; that's what happened to us.

If you check out Hotwire, the hotel they offer is Sheraton in Stockholm. The rates very between $155 to $195 (cheaper on weekends). It is centrally located.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

We bought our senior RT tickets on the Arlanda Express from a amchine in the airport.

the area around the train station is the least attractive part of this beautiful city.
