22x14x9 really need this
 

Help - I've been searching online for truly 22x14x9 inch carry-on's, but they're all advertised as such without being exactly those measurements. I don't know what happens if I show up for a domestic flight with a measurement .5 inch greater, but I'd rather not find out. Has anyone had experience with oversized carry-on's recently? Or know of one I can buy that's really the right measurements? Thanks. I'm traveling next month so I really need to get on this.

What you need to look for is 21 X 14 X 9 . . . which with the wheels comes to 22 inches.

In order to get a precise measurement it may be better for you to go to a brick & mortar store with a measuring tape.

TJMaxx/Marshalls have a good selection of luggage at very good prices. I don't think they are "forever" quality, both the carry on and checked bag in the set we got from TJ Maxx have lasted us several years already with 2-3 trips per year. At $50-$70 a bag I'm not worried about a lifetime guarantee.

In my experience observing passengers at the airport it's not the size of the bag that causes an issue but rather how it's packed. Bulky items in the outside pockets, or overstuffing the bag so it bulges are what make it hard to fit into an overhead bin.

Flying on mainline / legacy airlines both US and European I've never received even a 2nd glance boarding with my carry-on sized rolling suitcase. I don't have experience with any of the airlines that are purported to be very strict about carry-ons.

The requirements for each airline can vary and I know that some American airlines have more generous allowances than some European (or Australian) airlines. I'd opt for something that's likely to be accepted by most airlines, not just the one which you're going to be using for your next trip. Also, weight is an issue. I always travel with a bag which is well within the size specifications but would normally be over the 7kg permitted for flights from Australia (and many other places) so I check it in.

Your other thread is about traveling to Oregon next month, and here you mention 'domestic' flights next month so I'm guessing you meant to post this on the USA board. If you are asking about the main American 'legacy' airlines, requirements of budget European carriers would only confuse you -- apples and oranges.

thursdays: we have two of these. I lived for years with the TJMaxx/Marshalls bags but I've never regretted these Rick Steves' bags. The best part is that they are truly lightweight. 6 pounds is about the lightest I can find in a style like this.

I think you have to go to a store and measure them if your really want to be sure. Because sometimes even the tag is wrong and I think it often doesn't include the handle and wheels. I don't follow this idea that American carriers are more generous than European, just don't think that is true. I think there are some wellknown European carriers that are exceptional, but not many (eg, Ryanair).

So you tell me. Easyjet is the most generous of that bunch. I think BA has a strict low weight limit though for that size. Air France is about the worst of that bunch, except for american carriers, and even then they are bigger than Americans carriers on one dimension.

So as not to get a new carry on for travel on a line with a smaller size for a future trip, get 55 x 35 x 23 cm. Wheels take off 2 cm, handle 1 cm, so the effective packable size is 52 x 35 x 23. With carry on weight limits as low as 8 kg (17.6 lb) and even the lightest wheeled bag weighing 2+ kg, a possible solution is an unconstructed wheel-less bag weighing half a kilo or so if you can carry the 8 kg, as that will increase your packable weight by 25%,

I wouldn’t call a limit of two bags at 23kg/ 51lb strict or low. In fact it is probably te most generous hand baggage allowance I have ever experienced.

If you are happy with a non rolling case, take a look at the Osprey Farpoint 40 or the Lowe Alpine TT40 carryon . Both of which I have taken on board budget and full service airlines in the U.K. and around the world without a problem (well maybe just one!)

I am pretty sure the OP is flying within the US to Portland Oregon -- so all this easyJet, AirFrance/Czech/etc/etc info is definitely overload. Maybe if the OP comes back and clarifies???

My carry-on had to be checked on BA many moons ago because it was the appropriate size but weighed too much... yet they checked.

I'm thinking Leslie means to be on the US forum as janisj pointed out since she mentioned "domenstic flights". Entirely different than European budget airlines.
